Phyllis, according to what I read, he didn't storm out. He called for his car and left when it arrived. But he did leave early.

I have never been a major fan of his but did lose some respect for him after that. I hope someone calls him on it before the broadcast and he responds. I am not sure if I will watch this year or not. As stated earlier, he does have the experience of stand-up and working a stage so he might do a good job. Just my 2 cents! :)

See, to me, in that case it's even LESS of a deal. If he didn't make a scene about it, who cares? Sure, maybe there's an element of "sore loser"-dom to it, but like beautywicked said, a lot of people chalked up that loss to the release of Norbit. So, how does that make the Oscars fair by any stretch of the imagination if the voters punished him for releasing a sh*tty film that had nothing to do with the performance he was nominated for?

Honestly, I enjoy watching the Oscars every year, but the way people get themselves all balled up about every little thing regarding just drives me crazy. When the one that was favored to win doesn't win, the Oscars "mean nothing." When the favored wins they "got it right." To me when five (or whatever number) people/movies etc get nominated, they ALL have a right to win.

It still all boils down to a selection of people voting on a popularity contest. I'm sure that some people do vote according to what they think are respectable voting standards, but I refuse to believe that plenty of votes don't have to do with personal animus or affection, because of the nominee's total body of work, or sometimes just to be a vote cast AGAINST another nominee.

And seriously, Hathaway and Franco were god-awful last year. It was to me, without hyperbole, the worst Oscars in recent memory. They ain't got nowhere to go but up.

/end rant (which was directed at no one. It was just a sort of "in general" thing).

I thought Murphy was ok in Dreamgirls, but I wasn't wowed or anything. And I certainly didn't think the award should have gone to Alan Arkin, who I felt was the single most forgettable actor in Little Miss Sunshine. I love the movie and have watched it several times and I still don't get the Arkin love.

I agree with Phyllis - and I wonder how many voters actually see all five nominated performances before voting.

As for Eddie Murphy, I'd say he'll do a good job - but if he doesn't, the Academy will go back to Billy Chrystal's safe pair of hands next year.

Which is why the host was announced now, instead of January like it usually is.

My apologies for the chronology. But as Q pointed out, the choice is still about promotion.

I remember when the Oscars used to show presenters who had appeared in big movies that were nominated. You'd see Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford present the year of Star Wars, etc.

Now, you see pairings of couples who will be seen in FUTURE movies together. And they're announced as "soon to be appearing in the forthcoming" blah-blah.

It's one big giant infomercial booth at the county fair. So transparent.

Jackie Earle Haley should have won, hands down. Murphy was serviceable in DREAMGIRLS but I probably wouldn't have even nominated him, let alone voted for him. And I've never really believed the line that Murphy's loss was "punishment" for making NORBIT. I understand he was likely the frontrunner (having won the GG and SAG), but upsets happen, especially when they're deserved. Arkin was better than Murphy, and Haley was better still than both of them. If the Oscars "punished" people for making crap movies, ALL ABOUT STEVE would have sunk Sandra Bullock's chances and Meryl Streep would have the third Oscar she so richly deserved.

I'd say if any outside factor caused him to lose the award, it was probably the condescending attitude he espoused during awards season. Remember his GG speech: "Thank you David Geffen for convincing me to work for free."

What bothers a lot of people, I think, was that Murphy left before Hudson won Best Supporting Actress. It sucks to lose, sure, but you couldn't at least hang around to see your 25-year-old co-star win her first Oscar?
