I kind of like Absolute Beginners with David Bowie. It has some nice sequences.
THE INSPECTOR GENERAL w/ danny kaye
THE COURT JESTER w/ danny kaye (the midgets get me everytime)
these are the BEST!
I would say Call Me Madam is underappreciated. George Sanders really had a voice.
I know it's not exactly a musical, but is Bloodhounds of Broadway any good?

Doesn't Star Spangled Rythym have that "A Sweater, a Sarong and a Peek A Boo bang" number with Sheridan, Goddard and Lake? If so...the best number in that movie isn't musical at all; it has Lynne Overman (talk about underappreciated), Fred MacMurray and others displaying female behaviors at a men's poker game and it's a riot.
Many of the films mentioned here were not underappreciated at the time of their releases. THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, for example, was one of the biggest films of 1954; and, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, was the biggest hit in the history of Universal Pictures, up to that point. If you're talking about today, then...well, everything is underappreciated, unless it's CHICAGO (which happens to be overaapreciated!)
I think that's pretty much been covered earlier in the thread, johnboy, but I know what you're saying. I was thinking more of musicals that aren't as appreciated as they should be now. My intention with this thread was for people who haven't seen some of these movies to hear about them and possibly check them out.
Sorry to be redundant. That's what I get for not reading the entire thread; or, even realizing how old it is!
And, just to actually reply, my favorite of the underappreciated musicals, is STAR!

I love it exactly for what it is...
a heart-felt, star-studded, romantic, train wreck.
I find it, virtually, unwatchable. I do like to listen to the CD, though. I've no issue with the score, at all.

Ha! Well, I liked BILLIE well enough, and I loved FUN IN ACAPULCO. DOLLY is fine; and even wonderful in parts; and, MAME isn't as rotten as most people make it out to be. Anything with Barbara Stanwyck is worth watching; but, THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT and CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC deserve no appreciation.
I think Summer Magic is better than its reputation. Deborah Walley gives an entertaining performance in it. It's also fun to see Hayley try to hide her accent.

NEWSIES! It didn't do well at the box office apparently, but it apparently became a cult classic.
Has anyone seen the Copacabana tv movie with Manilow, Annette O'Toole, Estelle Getty, and Ernie Sabella? Any good?
How about The Idolmaker with Peter Gallagher? Another not-quite-a-musical movie.

Finian's Rainbow with Petula Clark and Fred Astaire. Also Goodbye Mr. Chips with Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark.
I love FINIAN'S RAINBOW. I've seen THE IDOLMAKER. Right, it isn't a musical. It's a pretty good look at what is was like for the Philly boys like Frankie Avalon, Jimmy Darren Fabian and Bobby Rydell. I've also seen COPACABANA, when it aired; but, I really don't remember anything about it.

CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC deserve no appreciation
Surely, you jest. It has the original Baby June and Tammy Grimes as well as The Village People, Barbara Rush, Steve Guttenberg, Oscar Nominee Valerie Perrine, Marilyn Sokol and Bruce Jenner!
