I guess I don't understand how theyre hoping this can save the show...

It worked for Happy Days! Wait, I think I meant that in reverse.
Are the network contracts of Arnett, Applegate, and Rudolph dependent on this show reaching a certain threshold? You might as just get all of these guys a brand new show- which honestly wouldn't be the worst idea with different writers and different premise.
I am putting money on the fact NBC suits saw Applegate and Rudolph returning on SNL in the last year and thinking, 'so this is where they get the laughs!'

From EW:
For viewers, the biggest difference will hearing the show’s audience laugh at jokes.
I think the big difference will be hearing anyone laugh at the show's jokes.
I hope this means that Community is going to get Up All Night's time slot, at least temporarily.
I love the cast, and wish I found the show more amusing. It's just... not (though I'd gladly take it over, say, Whitney). Is NBC trying to go more for traditional sitcoms due to CBS' recent success with them? I know they have Men with Kids, or whatever it's called, which really sticks out in their lineup. But really, as everyone else has said, this seems like an awful idea, and will just make the show all that much worse.
I didn't really have a problem with this show (or Whitney, for that matter). I don't think they're the greatest, but I'll watch them as opposed to Happy Endings, Guys With Kids, New Girl, Ben and Kate, Sullivan and Son or Rules of Engagement.
I think BEN & KATE is really good. I think there's been 4 episodes so far and I've actually cried at the end of maybe 3 of them, I find them really touching.

I think Happy Endings is funny, but Ben and Kate, man, I don't understand that at all. It's just so... nothing.
I just don't think Up All Night has ever been consistently funny. And they got rid of the best character (Missy) to replace her with the brother, who was on Best Friends Forever, which was funnier in its six episode burn off than Up All Night Ever was.
We get it. You guys used to be fun, now you have a baby. Rinse and repeat.
Yeah, I dunno. I think BEN & KATE has a lot of heart. I look forward to it each week now, so it'll be gone by the new year.
Yeah, the brother is awful and came out of nowhere. But I loved seeing Jason Lee on the show. He's so yummy.

Agreed on Jason Lee. I think the brother is really cute, too, but he just adds nothing to this show and he was on a much funnier show that NBC didn't even try to help succeed.
But once those three cameras are set up and the studio audience arrives, I guess NBC is expecting Big Bang Theory's audience or something?
I dunno, but I am curious to see how it will differ. Just happy to see Applegate, regardless. I was sad when Samantha Who got canceled (and now Barry Watson had to succumb to season 32 of Gossip Girl as "rich nice guy saddled with a mean girl" number 256).
I've really gotten into Happy Endings. I think the Russo Brothers infusion of wackiness in the second season really won me over since I'm a major Community fan. Plus the whole cast seems game for anything. I hate that it is up against New Girl, which has become okay when it became a more ensemble show, since I fear it will get cancelled.
Ben & Kate has potential. I wish they used the little kid more and Lucy Punch unsurprisingly became my favorite part about the show thus far. It still has the training wheels on though but I still like it more than The Mindy Project, that is much more likely to get picked up, which gave me the false impression Anna Camp was the second banana when she has gotten maybe 2 minutes of screen-time in three episodes. And I only like the Morgan character.
Speaking of BFF and episode burn off, it still amazes me NBC did not give that or Bent a real chance. And both got reasonably good reviews for mid-season replacement shows.
Tonight's BEN & KATE was fantastic. I actually laughed so hard I cried. Twice.

I think that show is great, as well. Two really funny new comedies (To me, at least)

I just wish Ben and Kate wasn't a tired old improv class project with Nat Faxon using his patented "idiot expression" based on pretty much every other character he played.
You're not married! You're brother and sister!
Riffing on an inappropriate and/or random subject endlessly with short awkward pauses!
Unison improv of a song by looking at each other!
Deliberate and forced nerdiness deploying the use of buck teeth!
Slutty girl speaks inappropriately to a child!
"Awww" moment at the end!
It's just a Mad Libs series.
