Vanilla Sky

Whilst Elizabethtown might be dissapppointing, let us not forget Cameron Crowe's previous flick, the incredible american remake of abre los ojos.

I loved how he used the framework of the spanish film to make a scathing satire of the Image Age. It perfectly embodies our culture of cheap fixes and constant bombardment of images and ideas trying to crowd our brains. (I found Chuck Palahniuk's book Lullaby to be thematically similar)

The murder sequence in the bedroom is probably the most well directed moment of Crowe's entire career. I hope he does a darker film next time. He's quite good at it.

While I LOVE Almost Famous and enjoy Jerry Maguire, I could not even make it all the way through Vanilla Sky. I'm sure I'll get around to seeing Elizabethtown, but the word on it is so bad, I'm not really in much of a hurry anymore.

I'm one of the few who really loved this movie. I find it to be layered, complex, and emotional. It's also very well-acted and beautifully shot. Cameron Diaz does very well in a dark role, Penelope Cruz is radiant as Sofia, and Kurt Russell is solid as the psychologist.

I'll also be the one to commend Tom Cruise for his work in this. I'm sure it must be hard to be one of the biggest (and most recognizable) movie stars in the world, and still convince people to accept you as a different person. Somehow, Cruise does just that.

Abre los ojos was a great movie, but the added elements of art and music are very interesting here, and add a lot to the film's main themes. I don't understand why people hate this movie, and I probably never will. Oh, well.

Well to be fair, it does have Tom Cruise in it..

Sorry, but this was an awful, awful, awful movie. Gah, I cant believe I wasted money to see it in the movie theaters. It was painful to sit through, honestly. Cruise and Diaz were really ok, not that bad, but the material was just so incredibly hurrendous that their performances didn't stand their ground like they should have.

Cruise was brilliant in Risky Business, Rain Man, Born on the 4th of July and Jerry McGuire. Lately, though, he has shown no growth as an actor. He is always Tom Cruise. Having the make-up department apply some prosthetic scars to his face, as he did in both Vanilla Sky and Minority Report, is not a replacement for actual character development.

Was clammy on the original, HATED the remake.

A VERY -VERY underated film ! Really has some fine work in it by everyone minus the hard to understand Ms. Cruz.......A Great peice of work of you kust allow it to sort happen...

I only saw the Spanish original, which I really liked. Did Vanilla Sky's storyline deviate from that of the original? If it didn't deviate significantly, then what made the movie so bad (since the original it was based on was quite good, and critically well-received)? Was it the acting?
