Virgin Megastore in Times Square closing...

Posted: 6/6/08 at 2:04pmI'll miss the Broadway performances there. I wonder if they'll just do more in other locations, like B&N, or whether there won't be as many.

Posted: 6/6/08 at 5:57pmToo bad. As my friend was purchasing a gift for someone, I was standing watching the Thriller video with Michael Jackson. Love that video. Oh well, I will just have to go to the Marriott lounge and spend $14.00 for a drink. I have done this before.

I can see why they had to close if so many people just used it to spend time before shows, lol!
I think this is really sucks! Many times I have no idea what cd I want to buy, so browsing around and looking (and listening) always helped me decide. I guess the only place we'll be able to shop will soon be the internet.

I think most people just browsed there... listened to tracks, waited for shows...
Then if they liked something, they went home and downloaded it from iTunes or bought the CD from a discount site.

That's probably part of it, Besty.
I noticed on the right side of the page of that article, that Starbucks has opened a mega store in the Empire State Building. Two stories! I thought they weren't doing well lately.

Posted: 6/6/08 at 10:53pmI wonder what will open there...I remember in the 90's Disney wanted ot open a hotel in Times Square...maybe?

Posted: 6/6/08 at 11:42pmAbsolutely ridiculous! Now there is NOTHING to shop for in the Times Square Area. I guess I'll have no other reason to go there, except to see shows on Broadway. Now I will have to do all my DVD shopping online and have to pay shipping and wait longer to get what I want. So sad, it is a terrific store. And seeing the Barnes and Nobles shutter, I wonder what will be next....

I don't frequent the Virgin store in Times Square much. I hate Times Square and wouldn't even go if it wasn't for theatre.
I prefer the Virgin Store at Union Square, and also the one on Market Street in San Francisco.
Such a shame. I hope they both don't go vacant for long.

I think that this is a sign of people doing most of their CD buying online via places like Itunes or downloading the more popular stuff for free.
I know that downloading CDs is technically illegal but there is unfortunately no way to get caught because it is done all the time at all hours all over the world.
I am not saying that I download music for free. Most of the music I do listen to are by bands who support their fans getting their music online for free and get pissed off if you pay for it.
That said, I am sad that this is closing. I go to high school in Chelsea (about to graduate on thursday) and I enjoyed walking to Union Square and browsing the Virgin there.

Posted: 6/7/08 at 2:12amSee what happens when I leave NYC? My favorite store in Times Square closes. I guess I kept their sales up while I was there...looks like Amazon will get more business from me now. I'm really going to miss visiting there. Change is inevitable.

Beyond devestating, and yet another huge wake-up call to "please" support community record stores and indies! Society today is comprised of so much disconnection; it is really, really sad.
From previous posts, I know there are people in this entire forum who simply do not care for the environment, indie/record stores, and preserving historic places; and they either do not or refuse to see the ripple effects these things have on society, whether it be concious or otherwise.
If you are one of these people, please don't bother responding.

What's the connection between the environment and indie record stores? Am I missing something?
Anyway, I will miss this place. Yes, it was a lovely place to browse before a show. However, they always had GREAT $10 sales, and I often purchased cast recordings that were on sale for $10.

No, the conncection between indies and the downfall of society; the connection between the environment and the downfall of society.
Too many people in this country are also so afraid of standing up for morals and ethics; for the bettermment of society in the long-term.
We need to learn how to distinguish between garbage and reality. We need to make a change.
And if anybody here thinks otherwise, then that is so telling of why we do in fact need a change in the way people see, think, and feel.

Definitely ... and if you're ever over in the Bay Area, you "need" to visit the one in San Francisco!
The only good thing, a blessing in disquise, that came out of Tower Records closing was that it really opened many peoples eyes; I am extremely quiet and shy and thus notice things a lot more closely, and have seen a difference; not big, but definite; whether that difference is purchasing media at indie stores, getting coffee from Peet's or small indie houses, or even going to see the show at indie movie houses.
Support your record stores!!!

Sounds like a quote from the religious right. Perhaps we should limit choices and opinions as well? And we should put a stop to evolution as nothing should ever progress?

Yes, it does indeed suck ... if only I knew of Tower Records closing earlier, I could have started something.
These stores need to be preserved; they serve as monuments to what once was and what can be again; to morals and ethics; to all that is decent and pure.
Not all history should be relegated to books; the minute we think this is the moment we might as well kill ourselves. For we will have already done away with society.

Matt, not sure where you get your kindle and ebook info, but Amazon has run out twice that I know of.
I just bought one today, and being in the publishing world, I can say ebooks are flying out the doors of publishers.
Schools are buying them.....and while I do not think that books will evever be obsolete, ebooks are a way for schools to save on shelfspace.
Ebooks are here to stay......have had three major orders to three colleges in April alone, totaling some $60,000.
Besides books and newspapers, you can also get magazines, and as someone who usually travels with several of each, this will really help.

I don't know what RR is, but GWB, really? I dislike him as much as anyone, but really?? I hope you were being sarcastic.

tmm_fan--I wish that Virgin and other cd stores weren't closing as much as the rest of majority of the theater community but I fail to see how the closing of Virgin is a death of "all that is decent and pure." You let "fancy" rhetoric get in the way of an argument of solid points. Exaggerate much?
