Those performers, at least at first, were just as controlled by producers. Sometimes Whitney's arrangements and production were too slick or over produced (but so is a TON of later Barbra including her over produced Broadway albums from the 80s), but I think she COULD interpret. Mariah Carey, who I actually saw live with a bf and she wasn't bad, on the other hand helped usher in the oversing-endless runs diva style which Whitney largely avoided. Mariah sings songs one of two ways--no matter what the song is. Someone like Whitney or especially Donna Summer approached each song differently and let the voice suit the song more than the other way around.

I am a NJ resident and a democrat and I feel that we should not be lowering the flag for her...I felt the same way for Clarence Clemons as well. She was a legendary singer, the voice of our generation but that honor should be reserved for people of service to their country. We have lost servicemen in Iraq and Afganistan and no flag was lowered for them. Chris Christie is using Whitney's death to pander to get more votes and keep his name in the news...makes me sick

I've seen that lie repeated over and over on Facebook. I'm no fan of Chris Christie but he has lowered the flag for EVERY NJ service member killed in the line of duty since he has been Governor.

We sent thousands of soldiers off to fight in the Gulf War with Whitney Houston's voice, and only Whitney Houston's voice, singing patriotism in their ears.

The cause of her death was revealed:
"Whitney Houston died from drowning in a hotel bathtub, but coroner's officials said Thursday that heart disease and chronic cocaine use were contributing factors to the singer's death.
The release of autopsy findings Thursday ends weeks of speculation about what killed the Grammy-winning singer on Feb. 11 on the eve of the Grammy Awards.
Houston was found submerged in the bathtub of her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and her death has been ruled as accidental. Several bottles of prescription medications were found in her hotel room, but coroner's officials said they weren't in excessive quantities.
Beverly Hills police said in a statement there was no evidence of wrongdoing in connection with Houston's death.
"We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure,' said Patricia Houston, the singer's sister-in-law and manager.
Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey says cocaine and its byproducts were found in Houston's system, and it was listed as a contributing factor in her death. He says the results indicated Houston was a chronic cocaine user.
Coroner's officials said they also found traces of marijuana, Xanax and benadryl in her system."
