Holy SH*T. I am in utter shock right now. Seriously, before all the inevitable jokes set in, this is devastating. One of the greatest voices of all time is gone forever. I don't know what to say.

Thanks for posting that, Whizzer.

This one's hitting me hard, for some reason. I know I didn't know the woman but I grew up with her music as a constant in my life. I saw her live when she was incredible and it will always stay with me.

Broadwayjoe, it is very sad that some people cannot handle Fame or Success. I am sure there is some kind of psychological mechanism behind it. I have worked many super talented people who for one reason or another self destructed.
My feeling is to be an artist you have to be in touch with more raw emotion. Sometimes self medicating takes the edge off of things. Self medicating can lead to escape and addiction.

I grew up loving her too. Bought every album and played them all to death. My neighbors better be ready for some hardcore sing-a-long medleys tonight. Much love to one of the best voices to record music.

I agree with an earlier poster; somewhere in LA, the Grammys producers were probably enjoying a pre-show night of partying and are now in a white heat to scramble together a tribute. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes right now.

CNN is now reporting the entire show will be changed.

I was SOOOOO looking forward to this for Bruce, Adele and the Beach Boys and I never watch awards shows. Now it's going to be so dark and sad.

Her first recorded song was a wonderfully melodramatic ballad by Paul Jabara from his album Paul Jabara and Friends (where It's Raining Men also premiered). She continued to sing it live into the 90s so it always annoyed me it was never a bonus track on any of her compilations. RIP

I don't think anyone in this thread means anything mean spirited by pointing out how she caused her own destruction in many ways--but the issue of drug abuse is very complex, and I think it's in pretty poor taste to just brush it off--hours after her announced death no less--as "Meh just another stupid person who did drugs..."

I haven't listened to "I'm Your Baby Tonight" in a while and forgot about some of these gems like "My Name is Not Susan" and "Who Do You Love." So many today are talentless hacks, but she had the goods. A tragic life to be sure, but so much of what she gave the world was pure gold.

Welcome. I LOVE My Name is Not Susan. That album got a lot of flack at the time--people didn't like Whitney jumping on the New Jack Swing bandwagon with many of the songs (the title song actually had comnpletely different mixes and videos in North America and the rest of the world) but it has some real gems.

Of course I also loved My Love is Your Love, admittedly her last major release I loved--and I'm not usually into R&B. It also had the best dance club mixes of any album I can think of--it helped that I started going clubbing and came out just as it was big. I still have all the CD singles from it somewhere...
