There are only "black hats" and "white hats" in the world. So says formulaic TV shows and most movies and plays.

If you defend someone, you automatically think they are a saint only. Pure, through and through. They can do no wrong even when you point out that they can and have.

If you criticize someone, they are the devil incarnate and shouldn't be allowed to breathe.

I think more than anything I'm annoyed by Meryl's soapboxing at an awards ceremony honoring Emma's work in a Disney movie. I don't like it when celebrities think they can use that platform as an open mic for their personal political beliefs, especially when the moment and the evening has nothing to do with them or what they think.

That kind of personal grandstanding has always pissed me off.

EDIT: If she wants to make a statement about Disney and his ethics, let her do it somewhere else: in a blog or an interview with and about her and what she believes.

Save it for the Into the Woods junket where she's in her own Disney movie, "working for the man."

"I have a different idea as to why Streep was seduced into playing Donna. It was to prove Pauline Kael wrong. Years ago Kael, the late, massively influential New Yorker film critic, wrote that Streep only acted "from the neck up".
Kael's bile hurt Streep. "It killed me," she once said. But at least, I suggest, by taking this role in Mamma Mia! you are, in a very literal, high-kicking way, proving Kael wrong. Few 59-year-old screen actors seem as lively from the neck down as she does as Donna.
"I'm incapable of not thinking about what Pauline wrote," Streep replies seriously. "And you know what I think? That Pauline was a poor Jewish girl who was at Berkeley with all these rich Pasadena Wasps with long blonde hair, and the heartlessness of them got her. And then, years later, she sees me."

I'm more interested in the blind spot Streep demonstrated here, condemning Disney but letting Thatcher off the hook for far uglier actions that had much farther reaching ramifications. I remember being rather appalled at the sight of Leonardo DiCaprio on some red carpet talking about what a great guy J. Edgar Hoover was.
