Weeds - Season 7

Hey guys -

Really wanting to know which of you are watching the new season and what you think. I think the creators set the bar so high during the "Agrestic Seasons" that it has hindered all succeeding seasons, but Mary Louise Parker just never ceases to amaze me. I still kick myself for not seeing her in Hedda Gabbler when I lived in NYC. Also, the two boys have literally grown up on this show which has been amazing to see.

Love to know what everyone thinks!

P.S. I realllly hate that they don't play "Little Boxes" before each episode now. Loved that little diddy!

I know a lot of people have their criticisms of it, but this is one of those shows I have loved from day one and love it still to this day. I know that Nancy is a total narcissitic, selfish mess. I know she's practically a sociopath. All that and more, but I've been following her for seven (ten if we include the time jump) years, so I can't let her go.

I still miss Conrad and Helia, though. And that nutty ho, Celia. And Isabel. Etc and so forth. But I like that, if anything, it's a show about the consequences or your crazy ass decisions. I actually just rewatched the first six seasons over the past few months and it's crazy how far removed she is from where she was in the first season. I often wondered if Nancy might wind up dead in the middle of any given season, so I thought having her actually having served time now makes sense. And I'm glad we didn't have to see it.

And is Esteban really dead? I'm thinking the answer is yes, because I can see this show wanting to have Nancy's streak of burying EVERY man she marries continue.

I'm not impressed so far, but I love this show so much and I refuse to give up on it.

At first I heard this was gonna be the last season, but then I thought I read that Justin Kirk said he didn't think it was. I am positive I will watch this show if runs one more year or five more years. Lord. Could you imagine?

Phyllis - I am right there with you. I have invested WAY too much time with Nancy and the gang to give up now. I miss Heylia and Conrad SO much, and am constantly learning things by watching Tonye Patano's performance on the show.

There are times when I get so incredibly angry with Nancy and how much she seems to lack consideration for her sons. But then she redeems herself by going to prison for Shane and doing anything to protect little Stevie, and I'm hooked again.

I think what's kept me so interested is the actors incredibly simple, yet provocative performances of these characters. Every episode is like a master class in acting - Parker, Kirk, Perkins, Patano.

I really do think Esteban is gone. To say they found him dead in the prison yard is pretty extreme, and I don't see how there's any way he could "resurrect" from that. But then again this is Jenji Kohan we're talking about, so anything is possible.

I have always thought it would be MORE interesting if they hadn't killed off Pilar in Season 5. I think the relationship between Nancy and Pilar would have been SO interesting to watch, and I was actually kind of supportive of Nancy and Esteban's relationship.

Lord, the Esteban/Mexico/Tunnel season(s?) used to make me sick to my stomach with anxiety while watching them. And that was how many seasons, two? That's about the show gives to each locale, right? (Intentionally or not). I think Pilar's death was the best way to get them out of Mexico and on to a new chapter in the show.

So let's see.

Seasons 1-3 (Agrestic)
Season 4-5 Ren Mar/Mexico
Season 6 On the run in the Northern parts of the continental US

Is that right?

Yeah, I believe you're right. They lived in Agrestic, moved to Bubbie's house, then to Esteban's, went on the run to Detroit, and now to NY. We've followed them all across the country!

I'm not sure if I'm completely on board yet with the whole "trading bombs for weed" thing, but I know she's gonna be able to turn on her Nancy Botwin charm to get out of this drug test she has coming up.

I would love to see the Botwins return to Agrestic/Majestic/whatever "tic" it is now. I saw on Elizabeth Perkin's Twitter that apparently they still credit her in the opening, but that the creators have no plans on returning Celia to the show. I'd love for her to get her own spinoff, now that Celia is in the weed business as well.

I'd love for her to return at some point, but I won't hold my breath. I didn't realize she was still credited.

What about Jill? Insufferable, right? I sometimes wonder if she exists solely to make Nancy look at least a smidgen sympathetic.

Jill is out of her mind. From what I understand Nancy and Jill's parents died when they were both young (in the 20s), and that Nancy bailed because she couldn't deal, which is I'm sure the reason for the amount of hatred/jealousy on Jill's part. I think it's gonna get ugly when Nancy tries to get custody of Stevie back.

Yeah, I thought the slowly unfolding history of the Price sisters was pretty eye-opening. I like how you only find out bits and pieces about their life before Nancy started weed. Wasn't it just last season that Nancy said Judah designed roller coasters? I don't ever remember them saying that before, but I don't think they ever actually stated Judah's profession.

I love how Nancy describes her sister - "Jill Price-Gray with a f**king hyphen".

It's been very interesting to learn about the dynamic of the Price sisters and where they come from. I think it's also interesting that they both are from Detroit, but somehow both ended up in California. Not sure if there was anything to that when Kohan was writing the episode, but it always stuck out to me.

And yes, I think you're right - up until last year, all we knew was that Judah was an engineer. And then at the state fair, we finally found out (through Doug's ignorance, of course) that he made roller coasters.

On the one hand, I understand Nancy's wanting to get Stevie back. She's his mother and she saved him from what would have been a rough life with Esteban (we all saw how Adalita (sp?) turned out). But at the same time, all Stevie knows is Jill as his mother, and Nancy is certainly in no financial or mental condition to take on a four year old child.

I'm liking where the season is going. I think the writers kind of dug themselves into a hole a little bit a couple seasons back, but I think they're doing a very interesting job of steering it in a new direction.

Also, these two scenes are some of the funniest pieces of writing and acting in the whole series.

This weeks episode was excellent. It was the first episode of the season that really got the story going for me. *SPOILER* It broke my heart when Shane rebuilt the Agrestic bedroom for Nancy. I'm glad we're seeing Shane's sweeter side again. I always liked that contrast between him and Silas.

On another note, what's with the intense amount of makeup they have been caking onto Hunter Parrish's face this season? I know he's a model now, but he looks just as attractive without all of that. Those white briefs he was in last week was certainly a highlight of the season for me so far.

It's fantastic how this how stays fresh. Still loving it, but definitely still wishing Celia was back.

You guys - I was catching up on the episode during some down time here at work and lost my freakin' mind when Heylia came on. SO glad she is back!

I hope this whole "going back to your roots" things is a set up for the whole season, and mayeb the producers are finalyl listening to the fans and our plea to go back to the old Nancy ways. PUMPED!

Tonight's episode was pretty good. I really like how the old cast is (mostly) back. I actually laughed out loud a few times this episode, which really hasn't happened in a long time during this show.

***SUGGESTED SPOILERS AHEAD****
The show hasn't been renewed (and at this point I'm worried it might now since they've been announcing the renewals while the show is still airing episodes) but I liked that it was open-ended enough. I doubt that Nancy will have a happy ending, she's screwed up enough. It'd be great if they did get re-newed, they obviously can't do the show without her (or not one that I'd watch anyway), so who knows what actually went on? I've been more into the show's other cliffhangers (the DEA agent, the sonogram picture, her getting arrested!), for some reason I didn't react as strongly to this one as I know I was supposed to, the show pretty much needs to fold, hopefully with a good final season 8. We'll see!

In this video, Jenji Kohan mentions things being "gas in the tank for a new season," but that doesn't necessarily mean there WILL be one. I want there to be one, because I still love the show, but if last night's episode is the last one I'm okay with it.

I've always thought that Nancy HAD to die by the show's end and whomever does it is kind of beside the point, so if this has ended, I will assume Nancy is dead. It doesn't matter WHO did it, because ultimately it was she who brought it upon herself.
