My dad is a bit of a homophobe so I don't like to play RENT around him. Part of it is actually because one of my uncles are gay. My mom is tolerant but it's weird, 'cause she thinks I'm a lesbian, and I'm not. And my brother...well he doesn't like to talk to me so I'll probably never know.
She'll come up to me and say things like: "play that song with the candle, I really like that song." It's kind of cute.
My dad loooooovvvessss Light My Candle. He always wants me to put it on.
My family doesn't have a problem with Rent. And though I haven't directly asked them about homosexuality, I know they're okay with it. (They may be a little uncomfortable, but they aren't against it)

My family likes theater, but I am the most involved, probably because I have a lot of the same beliefs as theater people. My dad is a traditional musical type person, like Phantom, Les Mis, Miss Saigon (all of which I love, but I like to watch stuff with more meaning, you know?)
I introduce my mom to everything/everyone I fall in love with. I remember when I first heard Aida and fell in love with Adam, and within the week we were listening to his CD together, lol. Same with tick, tick...BOOM! She is now a Raul fan, and of course can't wait to read Anthony's book. It's like haveing a best friend who loves theater, only better, because it's her.
EDIT: It just accured to me that I should tell her that...

My family knows virtually nothing about theater. My mom kept thinking that the OBC cast was still doing Rent on Broadway.
My mom loves One Song Glory and has a crush on Wilson.

My dad has asked me and my friend if I was a lesbian. Believe me, it was a very random conversation (I think I was talking about dinner or something and he just asked me. Got to give him props for that). I was kind of caught off guard.

My mom is interested in theater, most of her gifts to me are tickets to see different shows, but she really doesn't understand my capacity to obsess over them. She could go see a million musicals and plays once, but she could never see it more than that, despite how much she likes it, nor could she listen to a soundtrack as much as I listen to Rent. I think she is thinking that I'm insane.
She's told me that it is a good idea that I don't do drugs or drink because it's obvious that I would get addicted quick. Thanks, mom!

I'm not even going to add my .2 to this conversation...y'all don't want me to get started on it, I promise.
I'll just say that woo! DVD comes out tomorrow! Anyone else going to Circuit City to try and get the calendar that comes with it?
I remember when I was in high school, and I was taking three music classes a day just because I could, my dad told me I had to drop two of them. The two choir classes had to go, band was ok (only because my mom had made him buy my instrument) but choir had to go because I should be taking something useful like shop or another math class. But thanks to my mom, I got to keep them. Her and I are very close and she's very supportive of anything that I do.
On the topic of Rent... One of the things that I really love about Rent was that same sex couples are shown as a completely normal couple.

Yeah, I've always loved that Angel and Collins are really the most well-balanced couple. Mimi and Roger obviously have issues involving Benny and Mimi's addiction, and Maureen and Joanne have the Tango: Maureen problem.
I don't even know if we have a Circuit City...
Either way, I'm going to try to get mine tonight at midnight since I'll be up and out anyway. I won't have time to watch it tomorrow during the day so I may as well put my insomnia to good use.

Me too, but most people like to see stereotypical gay people because then it's "funny", and you can laugh and make fun, and never have to come to terms that these are real people. You can't hate them as easily if they are humanized.
I have been lucky so far with my family. I am bi, but lean more towards liking guys, so the people in my family who would have a problem with it have never figured it out. I wish I didn't have to hide part of who I am though. It's like pretending I don't like theater, or that I'm not a writer, or that I don't like oldies music.

The nearest Circuit City is about...an hour and a half, I think? away from me. After school, I'm going to work (which is about half an hour away from the CC store), so I'm going to swing by there after I get off. Hopefully.
I know the world doesn't always work this way, but I wish people could just accept people for who they are and be happy.
No one should have to hide any part of them. It becomes exhausting and eats away at your spirit.
