Ya know...I may get flack for this. But Alice Ripley says it's ok...so...
I take issue when people say 'these people don't know Jesus' or 'they're not Christian.' Actually...they are. They use the Bible to justify their beliefs. And, let's face it, the stuff they quote is in their. Now...sure, they cherry pick. But so do Christians who are pro-gay. You have to willfully ignore the anti-gay stuff, or contort yourself to an interpretation that explains those passages in such a way that negates them.
Which leads me to believe that it is utterly absurd to look to that particular book (and it extensions...going back, the Torah; going forward, the Koran) as any sort of guide to morality in today's world. It would be just as valid to look to the words of Armistead Maupin for moral guidance.
Frankly, I think we'd be better off.
To paraphrase Lawrence and Lee, to move forward, we must set aside the sweet poetry of Genesis.

Here is something
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4y6jnsqTuHw&feature=related
Now in this video one of the WBC members (I think it is Fred's daughter) says God will "Drop kick your a** into hell" ignoring verses like Ephesians 4:29, 1 Peter 3:10, James 3:9-11 that speak against profanity. That also deny's the fundamental Christian value that God cared too much about people to watch them go to hell, therefor he sent Jesus (John 3:16) and that it is God's will that all men be saved (1 Timothy 2:4).

If he loved people too much to send them to hell, why not just stop sending them to hell?
Also, isn't it creepy that he "loved the world so much" that he had his own son murdered for it?

Anna,
Don't you subcscribe to their newletter?
"Which leads me to believe that it is utterly absurd to look to that particular book (and it extensions...going back, the Torah; going forward, the Koran) as any sort of guide to morality in today's world."
Exactly! Besides, how many 'versions' of the Bible are out there. It's like asking witnesses at a car wreck for their 'version' of what happend.
Except that the people who 'wrote' the Bible weren't anywhere near the accident site.

The King James bible is the only true bible? Sheesh! He was a horrible douchebag who changed what was already there to suit his own purpose.
It's like believing the last person in a huge game of Whisper Down the Lane...idiotic!
Any truth that was in the bible was weeded out long ago, and any thoughtful person I've ever known finally comes to that conclusion.

Well, Paul and his letters were relatively close to the action. But they are KOOKY!
He was probably just pissed that Peter got to be the rock.

Posted: 6/10/10 at 2:21pmI always thought he was mentally ill. I didn't see anywhere in the article though where it suggested he was raised in poverty. In fact it mentions that Fred's family actually had more money than most while he was growing up. It doesn't seem like he was was wanting much, at least financially, when he was a kid.

Posted: 6/10/10 at 2:22pmOf Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the earliest written after the actual events was 36 years later and only two of them mention a virgin birth. The bible is a book written by man. Sure, there are some great passages to live by and want to live up to. Those are mostly in the red words in the New Testament, but nothing in it can be taken verbatim. People who do, scare me. Faith and religion are two very different things. These whackados have created their own hate filled religion and they enjoy hurting other people. If they spent a little time reading the NT, they could learn a little. Jesus said to love one another. Even if he was just a mortal, it's still a good rule to live by. These folks ignore that.

What really struck me was the protesters were screaming at people about not judging others, but that's just what the protesters were doing themselves.
I know they would picket the Pope if they got the chance.

So, having finally finished Namo's posted article, I'm left with a curiosity. Often, when the anti-gay rhetoric is at such a fever pitch, one of the first thoughts is a possible self-loathing on the part of the homophobe. Perhaps I missed it, but I didn't see any kind of approach to that thought in the article.
And I was really looking for it when they talked about the 'turning point' when he was 15/16 years old, and he was on the special mission to Utah with his best friend.
At the very least, I expected questions to be raised, but that didn't seem to be the case.
In any event, this man is disturbed.

Annas, just STOP.
You're the first to equate people being sick of you and your pathology playing out on here with the hate of the Phelps clan. Well, let me point out the true equivalency: You have more in common with the Phelpses than any of us does. You are just not as far along the continuum, and they're just one step away from being the American Taliban. YOU are more like them than we are. You need to shut up.

I'm more afraid of the annas priests of this world than the phelps.
Anywho, I didnt read the whole article, not because it was so disturbing, but that it was so poorly written. So could someone answer, Are the numbers in this cult growing? The parents of the excommunicated girl arent related it seems, so I was wondering if these hatemongers are actually able to recruit members.

She does JG2...I realized it's likely she's directly related to Mammy Phelps.
But, it may just be the stringy unwashed hair.

Posted: 6/10/10 at 3:29pmdoodle, I didn't think it was badly written. I did notice a lot of typos, but I figured it was probably just because of the rush to transcribe it. The biggest problem I had in that regard was the formatting. Different people would be quoted in the same paragraph and sometimes it was hard to tell who was saying what.

Deny's? Really?
Danny, I believe so. F*gs and Jews, don't you know. Fred Phelps and his entire "family" are deeply disturbed. I can only hope if there is a hell they find themselves burning in it.

doodle, they do not recruit. In the beginning of the article it explains that it is THE PHELPS and THE SINNERS.
Which is a point that is worth mentioning. One of the sons explains that Fred, who early on channeled his anger toward his family finds himself in the position of now needing to not alienate them (with physical abuse at least). This son's theory is that Fred has now directed his pathological hatred to the gays.
I found the article deeply depressing. I also can no longer call him a homophobe. Fred is something much much worse that even that word implies. I don't know how to express what I feel about him now, but I don't hate him as much as I did before.
Hate requires energy and somewhere in a hater's mind is the idea that one day the object of their hatred will "get his".
That they will somehow come to realize, even if it is with their last breath, that they were wrong.
Before I hated Fred as a person. Someone who should be held accountable for their actions. Somewhere, somehow, even if it is as he breathes his last breath. But now I see him as someone who is so far beyond any rational definition of humanity, with absolutely no sense of morality, that he is literally a monster.
Legally of course he should be accountable. But emotionally he is void. It would mean nothing.
I never fathomed the depths of his evil until that article. That such a pathologically insane and violent person walks free is a frightening thing.
I also feel for his family. The only comfort I can gain from this is that when Fred expires there will a Wizard Of Oz like transformation and his family will be free of the witch.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. This stuff is way too ingrained to be ended by a simple little thing like Fred's death.
