I found it quite odd that there were no "foo-foo" dogs up for BIS.
That pug was sweet and that Golden!!

I live with an Irish Setter. She is REALLY stupid.
I just loved the Pug. It made me want to get one.

LOL. I only said I think it's the most beautiful looking breed! I wouldn't want one. If I weren't allergic to dogs, I think I'd like a sheltie-aren't those the ones who look like miniature colllies? (don't tell me they're stupid too).

Seems the prettier they are the dumber they are. (As I say in my sig!)

Shelties and boarder collies are sweet and VERY smart, they just like to act stupid to keep you off guard!

I have 2 pure-bred Shelties, and they are very intelligent - unless they're just congenitally stupid, like one of mine is. But, he's very sweet and cute, so he he gets away with running into walls - which he literally does.
And with two coats of fur (an undermatting and the long-hair overcoat) they are definitely not for someone with allergies.
#32re: Westminster-
Posted: 2/15/06 at 4:15pmDG-actually, allergies are worse with very short haired animals. the allergens are in the saliva and dander. Long hair often prevents that stuff from getting out into the air. For instance, I'm not able to breathe (literally) after 5 minutes in a home with Siamese cats, where I can stay all day at a friend's home who has a long haired cat.

LOL - I love talking about the foibles of the different breeds. But seriously - lets stop calling Rufus a pit bull. He doesn't even resemble a pit bull. Pit bulls are a lot larger and more closely resemble an American Staffordshire Terrier. The pit bull is believed to be a completely separate breed but it is not recognized by the American Kennel Club and is not shown in dog shows like Westminster.
The dogs shown in the top two pics are pit bulls. That's Rufus, a colored bull terrier, in the bottom pic.
(By the way, Spuds MacKenzie was a white bull terrier. They're shown and judged separately from the colored bull terriers even though the only difference between them is the color of their coats.)

Jane - that's interesting about the coats - I didn't know that. My mother was allegic to everything that lives and breathes (at times, even her children
), so I didn't grow up having pets. This is a first for me, and I'm the adopted parent at that. It's been QUITE the adjustment.

Posted: 2/15/06 at 4:28pmI'm also allergic to everything on earth. The air, especially. Thank goodness, I'm okay with my adorable parrot.

I'm really not understanding the confusion between the two breeds - unless it's just a lazy thing of not really paying attention to the names. They're really not that similar to me.
I didn't realize that pit bulls weren't a recognized breed. I've had some difficulty with understanding some of the experiences that have occurred with them. I certainly wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of one, I know that!

Poor pup...
The winning dog was an interesting choice. It's not a breed that comes to mind when you think of dog shows.

I would assume pet allergies are a pretty universal thing.
With cats, much of the allergy is to the saliva, and since they lick themselves, you can't really find a hypo-allergenic cat.
As far as dogs go, the allergy is to the dander -- shedding. So hair, fur, thickness makes no difference, really, other than than dogs with hair shed less. But if you want a dog you can't be allergic to, you get one that doesn't shed, like a Poodle or a Shi Tzu (and some people will tell you Bichon).
I'm in the minority in the animal-lover world, I think, but some of the most wonderful dogs I've ever met have been pit bulls and pit mixes.
#43re: Westminster-
Posted: 2/15/06 at 6:04pmI'm pretty sure poodles are the only breed that doesn't shed, ever. I'm pretty sure shih tzu's do...and I'm not sure about bichons...I think they do though. (I should know this, I work for a groomer.)
#44re: Westminster-
Posted: 2/15/06 at 6:06pmIt probably varies from one individual dog to another, at least a little bit, but no, most Shi Tzus do not shed. Bichons do, but it's minimal enough that a good amount of people with dog allergies are okay having Bichons.
#45re: Westminster-
Posted: 2/15/06 at 6:08pmThat is the main reason for breeding poodles with labradors. They produce labradoodles that do not shed. If you need a guide dog, and have allergies, a labradoodle would be perfect.
#46re: Westminster-
Posted: 2/15/06 at 6:13pmThey don't shed at ALL? Peculiar, but cool! :)
#47re: Westminster-
Posted: 2/15/06 at 6:20pmI would have sworn that my sister's Bichon didn't shed. She does keep her hair cut fairly short so maybe it's just not so noticable.

Labradoodles and goldendoodles have been some of the most gorgeous dogs I have ever seen. The groomer I work for has many as clients. There is one labradoodle who is a rich brown with a thick dense poodle type coat but less curly, and she cuts his head very square. Apparently his owners purchased him for $3,000 from Australia. Insane. That's more than several horses I have leased/worked with. There is also a lovely black goldendoodle who comes in often. He seems to be all the best qualities of each breed put together. He is very tall (taller than the average standard poodle and taller than some goldens), but long and slender like a poodle. He's very mellow and intelligent like a poodle but has that friendly golden persona as well. Jet black, and a nice mix of the two coats. It's curly, and fluffs up like a poodles but it's a bit softer and looser. The other day there was another goldendoodle in who was slightly larger than the black one, more golden build and had the light golden coloring and his coat was much softer. After he was groomed he looked like a big fluffy...rabbit. Lol I can't think of anything similar. You know how cotton candy is fluffy and light? His coat was like that.
ANYWAY...I've also seen weird labradoodles who got the wrong end of the gene pool and end up looking like pudelpointers. Which I find incredibly interesting from a genetic standpoint...but sucks for the people spending thousands of dollars on the "chic new dog" and getting a wirey coat instead of a fluffy curly one.
Oh edited to add that most labradoodles/goldendoodles do shed a little bit.

aw, I had no idea there were goldendoodles now!
A black goldendoodle is a little bit of an oxymoron, no?
