I just thought she could have hit a grand slam with her gown and for me, it was only a triple. TheActr97J
It wasn't even a triple for me. I might like the gown on a 17 year old at a high school prom, but I think Michelle should have chosen something more sophisticated and form-fitting. It didn't spoil the magic of the night though.
This is my favorite dress out of the photos you posted. Turquoise is definitely a great color on her.

I thought the white gown was somewhat "prom-like," too, but then I thought, "No, that's the perfect look. Fresh, youthful, forward-looking." It said many of the things we are all hoping with this administration. White is all about renewal and fresh starts. It was a purposeful step away from the old and conventional. It was an excellent choice on Michelle's part. (But that doesn't mean you have to like it.
)
Humbug, as far as Hillary's pants are concerned...the Inauguration is not a "formal" event the way the ball is. Yes, one should wear one's "business best," but in Washington, it is 100% acceptable for women suits--with trousers--just as the men do. Plus, it was extremely cold. Usually, when I go for a first interview, let's say, in Washington DC, I wear a skirt...unless it is bitter cold out. Then I wear pants because I will FREEZE if I do not! I'm sorry, but it's still extremely sexist to insist that women wear skirts to a ceremony like this one...especially when it's outside and January in the Northeast!
Besides, how do we know that Hillary wasn't instructed by her doctor to dress warm? Maybe she had a bandage around her knee and didn't want to expose it. Maybe she had a suit to wear with a skirt but Bill spilled a Mimosa all over it before they left the house. It's just an assumption on your part that she was acting callously, without regard for tradition or in defiance of propriety. Did she wear pants to any of the evening events? No, she wore an Oscar De La Renta gown.
And let's face it, Hillary does not have Michhelle Obama's legs!
P.S. Aretha's hat was fabulous, TheAct!

Melicus, I agree. She looks fabulous in that dress. I also like the bright orange one. It just "pops". That black sweater jacket she wore in the pic with Obama and Oprah was hot. I also think she looks great in everyday casual/knockabout clothes.

Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama Ignite a Fashion Frenzy

Isabel Toledo is working around the clock to create a low-priced knockoff of the yellow Inauguration Day suit she designed for Michelle Obama.
J. Crew’s phones have been ringing off the hook as moms across the country try to get the colorful coats Malia and Sasha Obama wore to see their dad sworn in as president of the United States. (You can stop calling; they're not available yet.)
The verdict is definitely in: the Obamas are fashion superstars.
Especially Michelle.
"Michelle Obama is a new fashion icon. She is accessible and stylish. She is 'everywoman,'" Stephanie Soloman, Bloomingdale's vice president for fashion direction, tells Foxnews.com. "She has fashion flair and the ability to wear an outfit so that her personality shines through. Clothes do not wear her, she wears the clothes. And her choice of new and up-and-coming American designers is a real boost to the entire American fashion industry."

Yesterday I went shopping and the stores were rife with sleeveless "Michelle" dresses. I'm thrilled, of course. Not because I "look hot" in these dresses, but rather because I "am hot" before putting these dresses on, and they help me stay cool. (It's an "age" thing. Women of a certain age know what I'm talkin' about. I'm tired of people criticizing the first Lady for "baring arms." It's sexist, plain and simple. They just don't get it.)
This is what I bought:
(The first two look great together.)

Well, my wife is not eager to bare her arms, but she's hoping Michelle's preference for flat shoes will become trendy.

I think for the most part Michelle's fashion choices have been terrific. I'm particularly thrilled that we have a first lady who can wear beautiful colors and isn't afraid to do so. (I third the vote on that beautiful turquoise dress above). I do take exception to the way some of these dresses fit her. Her hips are somewhat wide for someone with her shoulder width and while the solid colors and clean lines of her clothes do help to narrow the hips down, the problem is that a lot of her clothes don't seem to fit her well. They seem a little more 'off the rack' and could use some tailoring to fit her better. Other than that, I love just about everything she's worn so far - with one BIG, HUGE, ENORMOUS exception! That's the red and black dress she wore on the night he won. I thought that was the most unflattering style and pattern she could have possibly picked out. Her hips looked about 3 feet wide in that thing. If I were her, I'd have had a party and burned it. The kids could bring marshmallows and made s'mores over the campfire.

Yeah, I didn't particularly like that one either. And I don't think it was meant to be worn with a cardigan.

Tom's Cat, I agree with everything you said, except for the part about burning the dress. She could have donated it to a Women's Shelter or Goodwill. I saw that dress on a model and it looked much, much better, so someone could get some use out of it. It was just not the best choice for her.
I don't care that my arms aren't gorgeous like hers. I always have a blazer or a sweater or something with me to go with my dress. But when you're burning up, you take the jacket off and you don't CARE what your arms look like! Believe me!
I want to buy this one too:
It's very "Michelle," I think.
