"And it would be so so nice to be able to do all my shopping, at prices I can actually afford, from one place instead of having to go to one store for this, another store for that and so on and so on hunting down affordable bargains on things I need."
But think of the calories you burn! If you weren't running all over the place you might wind up looking like...someone who shops at Wal-Mart.

I've never paid anything approaching that price in Manhattan.

It's Food Emporium. They jack their prices to the heavens and haven't had a sale on anything since Skylab fell.

Jordan, you can get great prices on cereal (and most other foods) at Trader Joe's, which also seems to escape the wrath of Manhattanites for having low prices and (presumably) driving out Mom & Pop shops.

The contention that Wal-Mart keeps people off the welfare rolls is outright hilarious, given the well-known fact that Wal-Mart wages are so low and their health insurance coverage is so shoddy that their employees require millions in government benefits every year. But hey, at least they keep their prices low for the sake of the employees they keep below the poverty line.

I wasn't saying I can't find good (reasonable) prices on things, I was just saying that like most people here, I do my shopping at a variety of different stores depending on whoever has the cheaper/sale items each week and that it would be nice if my shopping wasn't like a treasure hunt and I could just get those low prices on everything I need at one place. Hence, why NYC Walmarts would be great (for me).

There is a chain of grocery stores in the the NY-NJ-PA area called Wegmans that doesn't use union employees, either. No one gets on them because they treat their employees exceedingly well, and are often named to the Fortune 500 List of the 100 best companies to work for, almost always in the top 10.
The union vs. non-union argument has nothing to do with it for me- it's all about the near sweat-shop conditions in Walmart stores.

Since moving to central Maine my anti-Walmart stance is less about professional ethics and more about hygiene.

JerseyGirl, I have yet to enter a Target, CVS, Duane Reade, or even a bodega and 7-11 that has less nutritious food: junk food ratio than Wal-Mart. However, since that is my experience versus research and evidence, I of course cannot insist that it is the absolute truth.

I agree with Adam Greer. There are a lot of great places to work at that don't unionize their employees. Hell, Starbucks is considered a pretty good place to work at, offering their employees health insurance and stock options. Yet, they don't unionize.

Amuse, I wasn't defending Walmart by any stretch, but pointing out that there's too much processed junk in every supermarket. As for comparison's to CVS or the like, I would say an entire aisle of chips and soda vs. 10-12 cans of various veggies is a bit out of proportion to your average grocery store. They are there for convenience and healthy foods are rarely considered convenient. Many Walmart's have full produce and even organic sections. It's bizarre.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

AdamGreer, I love Wegman's. I have several friends who are essentially stay at home moms who have had part time jobs there just for something to do/extra money and they've all been very happy working there.

And maybe it's because Wal-Mart is trying to kill you in your sleep...

That's exactly why union vs. non-union is a legit argument to be having - when we know company management are a bunch of controlling, greedy assholes and management has all the power...that's exactly the situation unions were made for, to act as a counterpoint and opponent. Asking Wal Mart to please be nice and treat its employees better has never worked - unions are intended to have the power to demand rather than just entreat.
