There's this kid in my math class who keeps saying "that's so gay". Sometimes I just want to smack him because I have friends who are gay and he obviously doesn't know the meaning of the word. So what do you think I should do?
i've actually yelled at a few students when i heard them say it. definitely something that needs to stop.
"That's so gay."
"You mean that's so fashionable and witty?"
haha well if that's what it means, that was so gay bluewizard :P
Everytime someone says that, i HAVE to make a comment. I tell the person how offensive that comment is, and why does gay have to be used in a negative connotation, because, basically, what they are saying is that "gay" is equivelant to "Whack" or another adjective to that standard. I also tell them that they are putting me down as a human being by making such a comment. I've been in fights with stupid people about it, because they will never learn, but I've also had people apologize.
Personally, I think it's just as bad, if not worse, as being called "Queer".
everyone at my school says that and i just go off yelling at them i cant stand that comment i know many gay guys theres nothing different from them and us i tell them and there like ugh.
I have to tell them all the time,
"Why thank you! There is absoulutely nothing wrong with being a (I spell this part out) H-O-M-O-S-E-X-U-A-L. Please don't use the word gay. Oh and by the way, I'm a homosexual, and proud so f**k off you @$$."
It always has worked for me; the people get creeped out (for some reason) and leave. Some actually do scream it out to others but I don't care; it's true.

Ooh, BlueWizard, can I use that sometime?
I'm always telling people off for doing that. Unfortunately, they still don't get it. Now they'll just say "that's so gay" then give me a look and go "no offence." Ugh. We have so many adjectives in this wonderful language of ours; you couldn't find ONE suitable word that isn't offensive?
"That's so gay!"
"Straight back atcha!"
I went off on a girl at my school for using said adjective to describe an assignment... and I have a hunch that she didn't listen to a single word I said. Just rolled her eyes and went "Whatever. As long as they don't come on to me."
Now that I think about it, I really should've said something along the lines of, "Don't worry. Who would want to?"
Sadly, seventh graders are not the easiest to make impressions of such morals upon.
Ooh, BlueWizard, can I use that sometime?
Of course, love.
I also use another, less PC response sometimes:
- "That's so gay."
- "Really? I think it's so Black/Jewish/Chink."
(I can get away with "Chink" because I'm Chinese
).
That usually shocks them into realizing their own offensiveness. I find it's an effective form of defamiliarization (oooh, a Brechtian term!).
Sadly, a lot of people do use it in everyday conversation. but maybe if our culture becomes more accepting, we'll phase out the saying. That's my really optomistic hope
See...I unfortunately do say this more than I'd like to, I guess just from the environment that I grew up in, and I am trying to stop it, especially with the ridiculous amount of gay friends I have now. The weird thing is every now and then I catch some of my gay friends saying it, then catching themselves. But yeah..it's something I am working on.

BlueWizard: Hee. Thanks.
VonTussleGirl: Also sadly, it doesn't get easier as those seventh graders get older.

"That's so gay!"
My response is: "It sure is and that's why I love it!"
If I live to be 100 I'll never understand heterosexuals!
"That's so gay"
"Nah, actually, its pretty heterosexual to me.."
if they're female, I kiss them.
People can be so dense *shakes head*. In true Nicky fashion though, I am not gay, but I would still sing a verse or two from "If You Were Gay" to piss them off. =P
"That's so gay"
"I don't think it's really all THAT fabulous..."
Then, call them a breeder and run.........
I dispense my "death glare." I'll have to put a pic of that up sometime so you can see how truly frighening it is. My mother taught me well...
i usually yell at them because i know people who are gay. its just annoying. if its a friend ill just hit them. lol. if its somebody i dont know i shoot them the death glare. lol.

Not o be rude, because i know there is a good number of gay people on the board, and some of you that say "Oh, I yell at them!" may even be gay, but really... DO you all yell at them? Personally, I fell like i"M in tghe najority of the human race that kind of just ignores it, to save face, you know? I'm not trying to be a b!tch, but I just hope all of you who say you repremand people for saying things like that aren't lying, because I admire you fo rit. Again, I'd rather titter, then ignore it than say something simply because I'm afraid to be the odd one out. So, to those of you brave enough to stand uo for tourselves/ friends, a big kudos from me. If it means anything.

Unfortunately, the only people I've ever heard use that phrase are people I used to be very good friends with (not so much anymore, although I do talk to some of them, from time to time). I was comfortable enough to tell them off. I don't know what I'd do if it was someone I didn't know... I've heard some people in my math class use it (I'm in a class with kids a grade higher than me, so I don't know anyone, and am extremely quiet), but it wasn't at a time when it would have been appropriate to say ANYTHING. However, now I will probably use one of the witty responses listed above, should I find myself in that situation. Hehe...
Personally, I do not tell them to f**k off. I actually do tell them "I'm so gay" if they say "That's so gay" and they'll get really weirded out and go away. It's kind of funny. I've done that a lot of times. Yes, I am indeed a homosexual and proud of it!
I don't really hear "That's so Gay" as much nowadays. The new phrase seems to be "That's so Ghetto." It's funny that most of the people saying those statements are not gay nor have they spent any significant time in a ghetto.
