Our parish sponsors an annual "Giving Tree" during the holidays. A tree is set up in the church vestibule and is decorated with dozens of gift tags. Each gift tag has a gift request from a needy person in the parish. We are encouraged to take a tag as we enter and then purchase the gift that is requested. This morning I chose a tag that is from a teenaged boy (XL) who requests a "big shirt". Now I'm thinking this is like those oversized and knee-length tee shirts that Eminem wears. Am I right?
I'd hate to make a mistake on a gift for a kid who comes from a less-than-fortunate family.
that would be my guess but i never herd it ben called that

I'm an English teacher. Your spelling annoys me. You annoy me. So go to your room and stay there.

Hmmm, it could be a basketball shirt, or some other sports gear.
Something casual anyway, I doubt it's starched up formal-wear!
first of all. i would think that a teacher would have a little bit more pations so you must be a bad one
sekend of all . rain man?
Dolly, since he is a teenager, that is what I would assume. I just would feel bad if that's not what he wants. Good luck though.

You may want to check out a place like Abercrombie & Fitch--or another store like that and ask them for advice.

Well, I really didn't expect it to be a button-down Oxford.
No, I wouldnt go to an A&F store. Try something like Fubu, they make those oversized shirts. Footlocker also has some good things.
I know a lot of teenage boys where oversized plaid overshirt things. Maybe that's what he wants, because that seems to be "the style".
is there someone at cherch you can ask? Updated On: 11/28/04 at 07:48 PM
Dolly, in this case I think a gift certificate might be the way to go.
are the kids near you getto where they would wair shirts like that?
I had a similar problem. A 10 year old girl asked for a Mudd watch. Sounded simple enough, except that I no longer have a real sense of 10 year old girls and what they would like. I went with my instincts and got one with red and pink stripes, but alsoI got a gift receipt and put it in the package. If it's not one she likes, she can exchange it. But she'll still have a gift to open.
Dolly, I think he does want the Eminen/rapper baggy shirt. Something from Fubu or a basketball jersey is what I have in mind.

Big shirts are usually longer in length. You might want to think about a gift certificate or take the boy shopping. Anyway, this is a lovely idea! A true mitzvah!
and when they mean big they mean BIG i know i little kid would probibly be a siz e M and waires 6x
Out of curiosity, what church do you go to DP?

My church? Our Lady of Apathy.
The gift certificate idea might be a good one, but we are discouraged from doing that because it might be used for something inappropriate. Worse still, someone might sell the gift certificate and use the money for drugs. Similarly, we don't KNOW who the kid is because everything here is done anonymously. The St. Vincent de Paul Society does everything with numbers. We know that this kid belongs to "Family #45" and that's it. All the gifts have to be brought to the church on the 14th and then a crew of workers collates all the gifts and they are delivered on Christmas Eve. The family is also given a food basket.
I usually add a few things to the package I give. I'll wrap the gift and maybe put a large chocolate lollipop inside. One year I enclosed a bag of ribbon candy. I always attach a candy cane to the bow on the package.

The gift certificate really does not sound like a good idea at this point. I would ask a sales clerk in a store that sells teen's clothing. I can't remember what stores are in your area but there is always a Wal Mart type place somewhere or the outlet center. I looked through some clothing catalogues and saw big shirts defined as long and loose fitting.
