My favorite genre of art is porcelain: Sèvres and Limoges, Louis XV and XVI styles. And my favorite kinds of porcelain are teacups and saucers in those styles.

Posted: 3/11/13 at 12:27amI just have such a crush on Frida Kahlo, but I don't really know what she'd be classified as. I guess you could call her a symbolist except for the fact that she considered herself a realist...so who knows. I also really love the fauvists, especially Matisse. I grew up with his famous goldfish painting hanging in our house so maybe I was pre-disposed.

I'd say Kahlo was a realistic Surrealist, lol.
I'm also a fan of Fauvism, but almost entirely because of color.

Posted: 3/11/13 at 12:45amFauvism rocks! Having studied under Betty Buckley at Pratt, a student of Joseph Albers, I enjoy the shear glee in the celebration of color!

Albers provided such important theories of color interaction a la Bauhaus.
But I"m not a big fan. I prefer the wild abandon color of the fauvists and the period known as the Blue Rider (Franz Marc).
So you went to Pratt! Did you work in design since then?

Posted: 3/13/13 at 3:28pmFor some reason, last year I developed in interest in medieval art, especially heraldry. I'm fascinated by the symbolism incorporated in sigils, seals, banners, and coat of arms from that era.

@Jane
I'm in the DC metro area but hit up NYC from time to time. Oddly, I've never toured the Met but will add it to the bucket list. Thanks for the suggestion!

Posted: 3/13/13 at 4:58pmSeriously- For Medieval Art you must not miss the Met. I'm not even a big fan of that genre, but when I'm in those galleries, I'm transported into another time and place.

Posted: 3/13/13 at 11:04pmI can honestly admit that I don't really know enough about art to say. I do like artists that use a lot of bright colors.....probably because my dream house would be a house on the beach somewhere and I think that would look nice in a house with lots of windows and light. Something like Matisse. That is probably cliche to people to know a lot about art, but that's what I like.

Posted: 3/13/13 at 11:07pmI do have sort of a cute story about art and my son. When he was in 1st grade he was talking about an artist they were discussing in art class, but he couldn't remember the name. He was trying to describe it, but he was 6 so he wasn't doing a good job verbalizing it. He finally took a piece of paper and some colored pencils and drew it - it was Mondrian and I recognized it right away. I was like "Mondrian!" He's like "That's it!" Probably of no interest to anyone else, but I thought it was cute and said a lot for our art department in our school.
