For those who are interested, this could be an interesting topic.
I love so many of them but my favorite has to be pop art. Why? Because I like the elevating of elements in popular culture to artistic icons. I find so much of the work has a sense of humor which I think is important in all art forms. And pop art can be colorful or not, 2D or 3D, painted, silk screened, sculpted, collaged, photographed, any method. Also, it tends to make fun of itself as well as of our culture.
I myself just finished a digital art project about candy. I photographed the items first and then worked on them in photoshop. I'm happy with the results!
I tend to like any form art, if it is good. I do like the Primitive or Folk Art genre though and the modern art inspired by it. There is something very direct and raw about the depiction of things in the world.
SNAFU, I like that stuff too. Are you at all familiar with the work of Romaire Bearden?

I'm big on Modernism, in particular the Bauhaus aesthetic. Expressionism and Surrealism really do it for me, too. I just like how the whole Modernism period was an attempt to cast off the established schools of thought and go in a whole new direction. Bauhaus appeals to me, especially the design and architecture, because it was so radical at the time for being so clean and organized. Apparently straight lines can be shocking under the right circumstances.

Nice looking color wheel, Trentsketch. As for Bauhaus breaking with tradition, that's about what happens each time some artists form some sort of "club" and break with the current acceptable aesthetic. Think Braque and Picasso with cubism, etc.
ARe you an organized type person, Trentsketch?

I love the Antwerp Mannerists.
Really? I'd never associate you with that style.
No Jane, I am not but I have a piece that a local NYC artist made for me way back when, during my Toonces the driving Cat era, that is very much in his style! I am checking out his work now!
Jane2, yes I am organized.
The Bauhaus movement was like the double rejection of standards. They rejected tradition and then rejected what everyone else was doing while rejecting tradition. And if you really dig into it, Bauhaus was looking for a sense of logic and structure after World War I while many of the other Modernism movements were looking for an escape from the past that brought the world into the conflict. Bauhaus, unsurprisingly, had more longevity than most of the contemporary schools because of the functional design elements. I mean, the actual Bauhaus School is where architects figured out that even a low rectangular building without a sharp pitch on the roof needed grading of some kind to survive rain and snow with minimal damage. Bauhaus concepts are still used in commercial furniture and houseware designs because of the simple design and easy manufacturing.
oh good! His talent overwhelms me. When you see the work in person you can see the many layers and details he uses. You could spend a day looking at one of his collages.
Of course I could never ever afford a Bearden but maybe I could take out a loan for a print?
Definitely POP Art first, like Jane, 'cause that's what I grew up with. My art teacher in JHS was a Warhol artist, and took me to the Factory once in 1967. Very exciting for a young teenager. My avatar is PEGGY MOFFITT, 60s fashion diva!
Abstract Expressionism, my 2nd fave. 40s, 50s.
That's how I like to paint, (Huge canvassses and messy) when I have the room, which is very infrequently now.
Can you post some of your work, Jane?
ok, I will, but first I want to post one of my favorite Romaire Beardens
I wish I had a favorite genre! The decor of my house would be much more unified if I did.
not my favorite, but a typical Bearden
Fabulous! The BLUES! Great music, great artwork. Is that collage?

That's really beautiful, Jane. Thank you for sharing it!
thanks Gaveston!
Now tiny has to post her work!
Jane, I really like this guys work! I will see if I can scan Toonces the Tuneful Cat that was an original created for me. Spot on same school!
I love Russian impressionism, and my favorite is an artist named Nikolai Galakhov. About 15 years ago, we starting going to auctions as a means to furnish our home, and I fell in love with his work. Over the years, I've been lucky enough to acquire four pieces of his. The attached image is not one of the pieces I own, but it's indicative of his work.
SNAFU, I'm so glad you said that about same school. I had a feeling when I read what you liked.
Brian, how wonderful! Auctions are fun, right? Maybe I should attend one to try for a Bearden.
I don't know much about art, so excuse my ignorance on terms.
I do like modern art. I'm still dying to check out the MOMA, but I'm always doing something else when I go to the city.
And, I really love the paintings Degas did of dancers.
I love French Impressionism, I'm not really sure if I have a reason I just find the colors and the natural scenes to be gorgeous.
