Anybody seen Frank Henenlotter movies? His films are like the cousins to early Sam Raimi horror films. I've seen Basket Case and Brain Damage. I like Basket Case a lot more. Brain Damage sort of left me cold with one of the more disturbing phallic symbols I have ever seen on film in a while but it has this hilarious contrast of being pretty subversive and transgressive in style yet having one of the most overt 'Don't Do Drugs' morality tales.

The original Carnival of Souls and House of Wax were awesome, the remakes sucked. Im one of the only people who loved The House on Haunted Hill remake.

Splice is good, so is Ginger Snaps, i love the Scream movies though they are more thrillers. Let the Right One In was great and i love Carrie. The original Salems Lot was awesome (creepy window scene)and IT scared the hell out of me. Storm of the Century by King i found wonderful and Elm Street will always be a fave (even the campy sequels are fun)

Slasher films like Halloween are great (not the god awful remake), i really liked Cherry Falls as well.

However one of the scariest things ive ever seen that still gets me today is the scene with Bob in the corner of the room in the greatest TV Series ever Twin Peaks.

Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

Still haven't seen the ever-elusive CHERRY FALLS. F**king Netflix!

For something off the beaten track, check out Sam Neill and an off-the-charts Isabelle Adjani in the apocolyptic, Cronenberg-ish POSSESSION. Truly a one of a kind flick.

I also liked MAY quite a bit.

I went to Blockbuster today to rent a few of the movies listed here (sadly they didn't have most of the ones on my list) but something happened that hadn't happened to me in years. There was a new guy working at the store and when I asked him if they had something started talking to me about movies. We stood in the action section (because that's where horror is mixed in now, don't even get me started) and he told me about a few that he had seen and how they reminded him of early Sam Raimi and differences in horror now and that released twenty years ago and blah blah blah and we had the most amazing conversation. The kicker was about an hour later I found out he was 21.

Now, having worked in a videostore for 10 years starting at 15 years old, I have to tell you that's the one thing I miss the most. The personal one on one with customers. Learning about movies, bitching about them, what you like, what you don't like etc for hours on end. That's all dying now with Netflix and there's no way to ever get that back. I can't say I'm out of the blame completely since I stream movies constantly but I found myself having a renewed love for the store today. I know in 5 years they won't exist but I think I'm going to hold on to them for as long as I possibly can and rent as much as I can until the last one goes.

Note to all - if you want to lose a few pounds, watch this film. Youll never want to eat again.

Jordan, now you've just confirmed that I always figured that you are the real-life Randy from Scream saying you worked in a video store.

I agree it's a real shame that finding a good movie loses the person-to-person element.

Back to horror, I cannot believe I forgot it, but a really underrated one was Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (available on Netflix Instant). It's notorious for the negative reaction in its initial release that really soured Powell's career. It came out the same year as Psycho and there are similarities as it involves both murderous men all wrong in the head each with parent issues. There are no real twists in Peeping Tom but it definitely went there in making a statement about making the viewers to be voyeurs, a metaphor for the movie-making process. Still a pretty disturbing movie.

I remember reading about PEEPING TOM years ago but ha completely forgotten about it. As soon as ELF gets out (don't worry, it's intermission) I'm heading home to watch that!

And funny you make that Randy comment because it's been something people have said for almost 15 years now. And it's totally true. :)

Weren't the performances great Jordy?

I don't know if you watched the deleted scenes, but they are basically 20 minutes of the Keri Russel plot. Interesting to think how the movie would have changed if they left her story more intact.

Biggest question: What was deal with her mascara? Was it suppsed to be that sloppy?

Best line/most cringeworthy moment: "I...I can't bite all the way through."
OMG.

I didn't watch the deleted scenes but I will since the film really didn't do a great job with her storyline. I understood the other two and why they were the way they were (which made it worse, in a way) but it never delved into why this became so important to her an her obsession with it.

What really disturbed me was how sexual and erotic this act seemed to be to the two men and it was filmed as such so that you really equated the murder and the acts that followed as a sex act and a very intimate one at that. It was just an extremely twisted story.

Well, the pathology of the...eatee(?) was absolutely twisted. The thing is, there are so many people who have various psychological issues which stem from similar circumstances. The way he channeled his desire is not only deeply perverse, but disturbingly touching.

And what I applaud about the way that the eater was charaterized was that while what he did was monstrous, he was never portrayed as a monster. ***Spolier (if anyone is actually going to see this)***
The scene where Oliver hooked up with the guy (literally, lol) who ultimately was only interested in it as a sexual fetish was incredibly nuanced and well played. And what he did with that guy in the end showed so much about what the act meant to Oliver. It wasn't about cannibalism at all really.

Here are some of the most absolutely terrifying films I've ever seen:

THE CORPORATION -- a documentary about the evils of the corporate universe.

FOOD, INC. -- you may never want to eat again.

ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM -- a documentary about the Enron Horror.

PARADISE LOST: THE CHILD MURDERS IN ROBIN HOOD HILLS -- a documentary about a particularly ugly miscarriage of justice. There's a sequel, too, that is just as horrific.

GREY GARDENS -- Don't let this happen to you!

Larry Clark's "Kids" (1995) and Scorcese's remake of "Cape Fear" seriously disturbed me.

Also, "Ticket to Heaven," a 1981 drama about a guy who gets drawn into a cult. Freaky!

It's too early for noches.

August Undergrounds Mordum

It's the most disturbing movie(if you can call it that) that I have ever seen. I had 2 friends walk out of the room and my other friend and me managed to get through it. It almost looks more like a real snuff film more then a movie.

The only bright side of this flick is that if you can actually make it through the whole thing then you will never flinch again at any other horror/gore movie.
