Another one I really love. Sean (Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting) reads Will's farewell note, which ends with "Tell him I had to go see about a girl." Sean smiles, sighs and says, "Son of a bitch stole my line." Perfect.
Craig, that sounds right. I can hear ol' Chuck Heston now, ranting to the sky.
Here's a corny one, but it always makes me smile: The end to White Christmas where they slide the big barn doors open and it's snowing outside just in time for the big musical finale. (I know, I'm a big sucker for a happy ending!)
It's done just as beautifully on stage, best12!
Hmm....how about:
Dodsworth - "Loves got to stop somewhere short of suicide!"
Now Voyager - the pan up to the stars as they puff away, tears in their eyes as she says..."Don't let's ask for the moon...we have the stars!"
42nd Street - everyone exiting the theater exclaiming how wonderful the show was, and how they jsut know the director will try to take all the credit...then the pan over to the exhausted director all alone on the exit stairs.
King Kong - the regretful hunter/director exclaiming how "twas beauty killed the beast"
Hunchback of Notre Dame (NOT THE CARTOON) - the hunchback, sitting beside his gargoyles, bemoaning..."Why can I not be made of stone, as thee?"
may, many more...but alas..I have meetings.
justme2---I forgot how COOL the ending to 42nd Street is! It's such a quiet, effective moment for such a big splashy movie. Love it!
I also love the ending to "All Quiet on the Western Front" (from 1930, I think?). The soldier hiding in the trenches reaches out momentarily for a bird (or is it a butterfly?), and you see his hand out stretched by itself. Then you hear a gun shot, and his arm goes lifeless in the dirt. THE END. Very symbolic and SO effective.
Yes, another example of the stunning imagery of that era. Same kind of ending with "Greed" with the guy finally letting his canary free in the desert. Love it! No words needed.
NASHVILLE ("It don't worry me....it don't worry me...you may say that I ain't free...but it don't worry me")
HOPE AND GLORY ("Thank you, Adolph!")
DR. STRANGELOVE ("Weeell meet again, don't know where, don't know when....")

Terrific ending and terrific movie.
I never thought of the ending to the Graduate as anything special. It's a great movie, with tons of memorable scenes, but the ending in the bus is kind of a let down, IMO.

justme2 - I guess I consider the "ending" as beginning with the church scene, continuing to the bus. I know what you mean by the feeling of a "letdown" by the FINAL scene (the bus), but it was kinda cool. It made me wonder exactly what they were thinking. After all it took for them to get here, NOW WHAT?
Chita... I LOVE the Vanishing (european). I hated the American version.
I agree with The Graduate. I actually like the bus scene, as it leaves you wondering what happens next...

yes DD it's a favorite of mine. I didn't describe the ending so I wouldn't spoil it for those who haven't seen it.
and I HATED the American version.
so many
Oceans eleven (Just standing at the fountain to that great music and they all leave one by one, the movie should have stopped there)
Rebel without a cause
Swing Kids (Swing Heil Swing Heil!!) MAkes me cry so hard!!
Breakfast at Tiffanys (Cat!)
Emie, I'm with you on all of them.
Kind of a weird choice, but I love the ending to Cruel Intentions. Yes, the movie is hysterically bad, but the combination of "Bittersweet Symphony" playing and Reese Witherspoon's character driving to God knows where is just really cool to me.
omg! Cruel intentions, such a great ending to a crappy movie!! haha forgot about that one
I love the ending to Titanic when she dies and she's reunited with Jack.
The ending of CARRIE, came immediately to mind. Certainly the greatest ending to a film I ever saw in a movie theater. The reaction was incredible. I also really like the train station scene at the end of THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS. It's touching.
I'm not sure if anyone had mentioned these and quite frankly i'm too lazy to look...but i love the endings to Notting Hill and the Travolta movie, Michael.
Casablanca and Schindler's List. And my favorite ending of all times (and quite possibly the best last line of any movie), Some Like It Hot. Between the dialogue and the expression of Joe E. Brown's face... priceless.

One of my all time favorite movie endings is in Forrest Gump, when he meets his son. I cry everytime.

The denouement of the first Godfather.
PLACES IN THE HEART ... in the church when they pass the communion and say "peace of god" ... and the people who have been killed in the course of the movie are alive again and sitting in the pews with everyone else.
I agree with the mentions of Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Breakfast at Tiffany's. Has The Wizard of Oz been mentioned?
Whatever you might think of the movie, I thought that the end of Fight Club was brilliantly done, particularly with the exit music. I also love the end of Say Anything, where John Cusack's and Ione Skye's characters are in the airplane waiting for the "fasten seat belt" sign to go out.
It's been mentioned before but the ending of "The Color Purple" turns me into a sobbing mess everytime!
Those two yelling "CELIE!" and "NETTIE!" and running to each other... *sigh*
