I liked the one he wrote with Peter Straub. 'The Talisman'
which I thought was really cool.
"Pet Semetary" was pretty creepy.

'Salem's Lot' is my favorite by far. Just some great, scary stuff in there and a really patient set-up.
I'd also put 'Carrie' and 'IT' at the top of a list of favorite King novels.

It's a horrible book.
It made a horrible movie.
But God help me, I love "Christine."

Posted: 10/10/05 at 5:55pmCarrie is the one novel I've read more than any other, Stephen King or otherwise. But I have to say for the story, my personal favorite is The Talisman. Though Black House was awful. I also liked The Stand, It and The Shining (much more frightening than the Kubrick film). And from his later works, Needful Things and Desperation are the best. Can't get through the Dark Tower series, after number three, it took so long for the next, I completely lost interest and the story is so baffling, I didn't want to have to start again.

The Langoliers wasn't written for TV, it's one of four novellas that make up the book Four Past Midnight.
And yes, Dreamcatcher is his absolute worst book, I don't know why they bothered with the movie. And I also love Dolores Claiborne and was surprised what a great movie it made.

Without a doubt The Stand was my favorite book.
Apt Pupil scared me more than anything I've ever read in my entire life.

I strongly disagree. Even though I do like "Insomnia", I think that's his weakest.

Posted: 10/10/05 at 6:51pmInsomnia is very dull, but it's a good idea and very creepy in places.

Posted: 10/10/05 at 6:59pmExactly. It has a fantastic premise, and it has some truly brilliant passages, but he rambles on too much in that. I'm usually fascinated by his rambling, but he went too far on that one.

Posted: 10/10/05 at 7:02pmCARRIE is easily my favorite film from a King story. In fact, I like it better than the book. MISERY, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and DOLORES CLAIBORNE are other really good films from King stories. I know that STAND BY ME is a favorite of a lot of people, but I loved THE BODY so much, that the film just fell short for me.

Posted: 10/10/05 at 7:09pmI thought 'Desperation' was an alarmingly accurate title. Easily my least favorite of his books. (And, no, don't ask me specifics, I read it when it came out and I've drank a lot since then so memories of books I hated aren't especially detailed.)

Posted: 10/10/05 at 7:22pmOooh, I'd also forgotten about Desperation and The Regulators. I enjoyed Desperation, couldn't finish Regulators. A friend of mine was the exact opposite. I think it depended on the order you read them in.

Posted: 10/10/05 at 8:13pmthe only one i've read is THE DARK HALF. i enjoyed the whole writer/twin thing. the movie was pretty bad, however. i DID enjoy it though. i was the only person in the theatre, so i just laughed and screamed out loud and it was fun.

Posted: 10/10/05 at 9:06pmBag of Bones, there was supposed to be a movie, but I guess it never happened.
#42re: What's your favorite Stephen King book?
Posted: 10/10/05 at 10:22pmI'm kind of glad there hasn't been a movie made of Bag of Bones. It's so cerebral, I don't think it would make the transfer very well. I'm very glad to see that someone else actually likes it though, everyone I know who's read it wasn't impressed.

What's wrong with Christine?? His characters and dialogue are top notch in it.
My favorite is It. I read it once a year, which is kind of insane. I love Different Seasons and every last story in there. Stand By Me is the best movie translation of his work. I need to read The Stand though. I stopped reading his current stuff after Dolores Claiborne, but I should dig up a couple I have. Gerald's Game is great, and the suspense is insane.

I absolutely adore "Bag of Bones". I'm guessing that some people just lack the patience to appreciate it.
