I know that "Cujo" is definitely one he doesnt remember writing, because theres a quote where he says something like "I dont remember writing it, but I wish I did, theres some good stuff in there." :)

"Christine" is my guilty pleasure novel. A lot of people roll their eyes when I mention it. The movie, though horrible, is fabulous.

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

I think Christine is great! I love the characters and it's so dark (like most of his novels, but this one is VERY depressing).

I've read it countless times. Many times if I don't have anything new to read, and I need to grab something quickly for the train, I'll take Christine along.

A big car from the 1950's is coming to eat you up, boys and girls!

The Stand....hands down. That was one of the first book of his that I read...and for some reason...it just really gripped. Many of his other books are great too....but this is the one i like the best

IT....

and dreamcatcher, as many said, worst movie... it was horrendous. No idea what they were doing. It was just boring and just wow, I couldn't believe what I had watched after I saw it.

I've read all his work, too, and I love pretty much all of it, but I have to say, the whole Dark Tower series just really speaks to me. So complex. I love it!

Also, The Stand, Salem's Lot, The Shining, and Insomnia...

Oh, and Bag of Bones, too...

And does anybody on here remember a short story called "Strawberry Spring?" I remember it really creeped me out, but I can't recall which short story collection it was in...

There's a bunch of them that are up there. But I would have to say my favorite is Salem's Lot (with It being a close second). The book has a perfect pace a creepy set up and some genuine scares. That little dead boy knocking on the window at night still gets to me....

Salem's Lot was the first book I ever read that genuinely scared me. My least favorite would have to be Gerald's Game as I've never been able to finish it.

I also love the stuff he wrote as Richard Bachman. Thinner, The Running Man and Rage were all gripping stories, though the film versions of the first two were, as usual, awful.

For those interested:

Nightmares and Dreamscapes may be turned into an 8 episode mini-series. Bag of Bones has been optioned, but that's as far as it's gotten. The Talisman is said to be in pre-production as a feature film. Desperation is being produced as a television movie for ABC starring Stephen Weber, Matt Frewer, Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, Annabeth Gish, Henry Thomas and Charles Durning. Stephen King is very excited about his initial viewing, but believes it may suffer extensive editing due to its graphic violence.

King's newest, The Colorado Kid, a pulp fiction Hard Case Crime novel, is now available. His next novels are Cell (Feb 2006) and Lisey's Story (Nov 2006).

dunno if it counts as a "book" since it was a collection of his stories, but the first stephen king material i ever read was, "different seasons." that collection gave us "the body" (later a film, stand by me) and "rita hayworth and the shawshank redemption" (shawshank redemption).

Mister Matt-

I'm still anxiously awaiting the "Desperation" miniseries. Any news on release?

Coming in February 2006: CELL.

This is King's description from the ebay "Be a Character" auction to benefit the First Amendment project:

"CELL is a violent piece of work, which comes complete with zombies set in motion by bad cell phone signals that destroy the human brain. Like cheap whiskey, it's very nasty and extremely satisfying."

Then in October will be Lisey's Story, which sounds like it may be my favorite ever.

broadway86 - No news of an airing date as of yet. It is still in post-production, but as a feature movie, not a mini-series.

An update on King's siter says it's tentatively scheduled to air during sweeps in May of next year. He also said the cut he saw was very graphic and frightening and he didn't know how much editing would happen before it aired.

I loved Desperation, but did not enjoy The Regulators, which was just a little too bizarre for me. The way he juggled the ages and relationships of the characters from those two books was really fascinating, but also very creepy.

Thanks, Matt. I cannot wait to see the finished product. But, I hope that they don't cut a lot. This is one of King's bloodiest stories, and it should translate to the screen as such.

Replying to myself, in case anyone's interested in reading it.

The short story "Strawberry Sring" is in the collection, "Night Shift." I remember the cover of the papaerback I had in junior-high...it had one of those creepy monkey toys that play the cymbals on the cover. Love it!

Actually, 'Skeleton Crew' had the monkey on the cover. 'Night Shift' had a bandaged hand with eyes all over it.
