Romantico, I want you to know that I am no longer going to respond to your posts. I feel it is really unfair of me to engage you in debate, and I will try to explain why.

This weekend, I took my two boys to the local family YMCA, where we are members. They like to play basketball, swim etc. On Sunday the Y closes at 4 pm, so we headed into the locker room to change, shower, steam etc, at around 3:35.

The YMCA has some volunteers who work for them who are in some way disabled. On this particular Sunday a familiar person around 23 years old with Downs Syndrome was working, and he kept coming into the men's locker room announcing loudly, "We're closed! Time to go! We close at 4!" etc. Everyone in the locker room knew that the Y was NOT closed, that we had plenty of time (nearly a half hour) and that there was no rush. Yet, no one said anything to this young man, no one argued with him, no one engaged him. They just ignored him. Not in a mean way; in an UNDERSTANDING way. They knew that he was just mistaken, that he probably could not read the clock in the locker room, and that they did not have anything to worry about.
And THAT was what got me thinking about YOU. It is really not fair for me to engage you in debate, as you clearly do not have the skills to participate in a LOGICAL, COGENT discussion about anything. You read things that are hard for you to understand, your comprehension skills are limited, your responses are nonsensical and illogical, and you make yourself look foolish in the process.

I was unaware of your deficiencies at first, but they have become very clear in the past few days. So, I will continue to respond to other posters if they ask me questions or try to engage in debate. I enjoy debating with people, so long as I am dealing with people who are capable.

When I saw the words Down Syndrome in your pathetic post,I stopped.Yet another,"Insult those who don't agree with me" posts. I think you changing your question after I successfully answered your first one is disingenuous and is veering off topic. It also has little to do with the point of my posts in this thread.
My point (again) is that Maher is trying to imply that there is little to no link between President Obama and Saul Alinsky. His reference to the Obama/Alinsky link as "specious" and sarcastically saying that Obama could not BFF Alinsky since he was 10 years old when Alinsky died, are efforts on his behalf to convince his audience that there is no connection between Obama and Alinsky. Of course, Maher KNOWS this is untrue. He KNOWS about Alinsky's best selling book, and Obama's other Alinsky connections. Maher COUNTS on his audience's ignorance. He KNOWS they will clap like a bunch of seals at just about everything he says.

I am not trying to say that Obama's connections to Alinsky make him a commie or anything else. I am simply saying THEY EXIST. You can draw whatever conclusions you like regarding those connections, but don't deny their existence as Maher tries to do.

The Tea Party also uses the Saul Alinsky RULES FOR RADICALS but Mikey does not want anyone here to know that. But, Mikey, it's a very fair question, considering that whatever Obama-Alinsky link existed (as weak as at was) ended about 25 years ago. There is no such link TODAY. So, yes, Maher was right and you are just making excuses for the despicable smear campaign aimed at Obama.

Here is Alinsky talking about the "fart-in" in Playboy Magazine's interview with him, where he specifically mentions using "100 black people":

I suggested we pick a night when the music would be relatively quiet and buy 100 seats. The 100 blacks scheduled to attend the concert would then be treated to a preshow banquet in the community consisting of nothing but huge portions of baked beans. Can you imagine the inevitable consequences within the symphony hall? The concert would be over before the first movement -- another Freudian slip -- and Rochester would be immortalized as the site of the world's first fart-in."

Can I ask one more time what, precisely, is the problem with Obama's having read Alinsky?

And if, in fact, this is all about Bill Maher, and what influence HE thinks Alinsky may or may not have had on Obama, then who gives a sh*t?

This is beginning to seem like one of those threads by that unfortunate person who was so obsessed with Joy Behar and thought she represented some sort of totem for liberals.

I don't think the link was weak at all. Obama writing a chapter in a book about Alinsky's tactics? Obama participating in an 8 day intensive on Alinsky's methods? Obama then teaching the methods to others? And he taught those measures as late as 1992 at the University of Chicago (where he may have been teaching them right up to his campaign for President).
And I disagree with you about the fairness of your question as well. You asked me to defend the "smear" campaign against Obama regarding his connections to Alinsky. I then provided you with quite a few connections between Obama and Alinsky, and you respond with, "Yes, but that was soooo long ago." When I provided you with the evidence you asked for, you then changed the criteria of your question. Suddenly you added some arbitrary timeline.
BTW, did you see the quote I used from Alinsky's son? He is crediting Obama for using his dad's tactics in the 2008 campaign. That was hardly 25 years ago.

Again, I am trying not to draw conclusions about the connections (though I suppose folks can guess what I think of them!). YOU can draw your own conclusions, be what they may. However, I am saying there IS a connection. The connection IS there.

I don't know. I didn't start the thread!!

However, I think an equally fair question is, if there is NOTHING wrong with Obama's Alinsky connection, then why does Bill Maher (and CNN in a report they did earlier this week) try so hard to pretend there IS no connection? Does Maher and CNN think there is something wrong with an Obama/Alinsky link?
Some might conclude that they do.
(Though that would be an OPINION!)

Mikey, I think you raise an excellent point. I think Democrats have been unnecessarily on the defensive about issues like this. I for one believe that not only is there nothing wrong with having read and absorbed whatever one absorbed from Alinsky, it's admirable. And, as I've pointed out, many, many Republicans and other right-wingers agree.

And yet Democrats let themselves be put on the defensive time and time again. And I think it's time they stopped. E.g.:

Q: Are you saying this country shouldn't be run via limited readings of Judeo-Christian dogma?

A: Yep (and so does the Constitution).

Q: Are you saying that every American should be afforded the same rights as all others, despite their sexual orientation?

A: You betcha.

Well, you get my drift. The sooner we upend these attacks (and you're smart enough not to pretend they're anything else) by responding "Yes, and?", the better.

And I actually tried to research your claim that Obama taught Alinsky's methods right up until 1992. Try as I might, all I could find was various fringe sites parroting the claim, but not giving any dates or locations. So, the claim is not credible.

So, yes, Obama may have been taught the rules, he might have even been teaching the workshops, but that was in 3 years that he was a community organizer. Which was 25 years ago.

So, yes, there is no link, but there is a smear campaign. Just like i said.

This whole thread gives me a headache.

I am still not sure what "affiliations" Obama has except that he, like many others on both side of the aisle, have learned from the political activities of those before them.

If you are going down the route of "affiliations", are we going to look at each President of the Harvard Law Review and claim Obama has all of their views and positions - because that honestly seems like a much closer connection than a Alinsky. Many on the left would argue that Obama's health care plan is almost Nixonian, so is that an affiliation as well? He kept on Gates as his Secretary of Defense, what does that affiliation say?

If Saul Alinksy's name was Steve Adams, I seriously wonder if this dog whistle would be blown. I honestly think not. It is one more attempt to paint Obama as the terrible awful outsider who somehow does not belong. It mirrors the ridiculous birther rage, the teleprompter meme, the Czar hypocrisy, and the "Show me your Transcript" demand from Romney's kid. All if it is used to undermine Obama as being an authentic American, and all of it is used to send signals to the base that "he is not one of us." Lee Atwater and Karl Rove have taught today's GOP well.

It was Newt Gingrich who erected it. I almost want to keep my mouth shut about Maher's "selective" fact gathering. I don't imagine Romney will take that route, though there is no telling. However, the fact that liberal supporters like Maher and CNN tried very hard to minimize the Obama/ Alinsky connection leaves one with the impression that they would like to leave that bone buried.

Exactly. Like I said, rightwinger Andrew Breitbart used Alinsky techniques to bring down ACORN. If it works, it works! And apparently, Alinsky's methods can work. (Though I still think the "fart-in" is going a little too far.)

Well, I wouldn't go quite that far. I think there is a LOT of dissatisfaction in this country with Obama. If a small percentage of his 2008 voters decide to switch sides or to just stay home, he could lose some of those vital "battleground" states. And that will make for a VERY interesting November evening.

I am not saying it PROVES my point, but it certainly SUPPORTS my point.

The research I did stated that he taught about Alinsky and his methods while teaching at the University of Chicago. He began teaching at that university in 1992, that is where I got that date.

Wait a minute; THERE IS NO LINK???? Or, there IS a link, but it is 25 years old and YOU don't think it is relevant?? (Even though my sources indicate he was teaching Alinsky in 1992).
