Mleh, sorry about the rant here but it must be said.
Carlos Mencia suuuuuuuucks. Seriously. There's nothing more annoying than someone deliberately setting out to shock and offend people. And, of this crop of people, there is no one more annoying than Mencia. I'll give you an example. On one of the first shows, he showed a very old picture of Bush flipping the bird. Did he try to use this in a joke? Did he point out anything funny about this picture that hadn't been said already?
No. He just pointed at it and said "OOOOOOOOOOH! WE VOTED FOR THIS GUY TWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!" Dude, three years ago...
And the word "beaner" does not get funnier with repeated use.

I disagree.
It's not that he fails to find the humor in controversial subjects. It's that he doesn't even TRY. He just points and laughs at them, as if just mentioning them is hilarious.
He reminds me of the sort of person who is trying to make people laugh, is failing, and, out of desperation, uses the words "George Bush" for an easy reaction.
"Why did the chicken cross the road?"
"Because GEORGE BUSH TOLD HIM TO! LOLZ!"

Posted: 3/13/06 at 12:39pmYeah, I've caught the tail end of his show a couple times when I tuned in a little early for The Daily Show. From what I've seen, he doesn't really do much for me.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 12:39pmhave you ever seen his stand up special on Comedy Central? It's pretty good, probably my top 5. The end always gets to me, because he doesn't end with a joke and says some stuff that makes you really think. I dunno, I like the guy, some jokes are better than others, but yeah I agree with ZONEACE he's a lot smarter than people give him credit.

I haven't seen his show in several months since I no longer have cable, but when I did used to watch it I found it hysterical. He definitely pokes at racial issues and brings them to a head. His street "Speak Your Mind/Ask Whitey" segments are always hysterical. And the "dee dee dee" awards just killed me.

CS - perhaps people do not all have the same sense of humor.

Colin Quinn's show was at least entertaining in the sense that he got pissed off at the audience if they didn't laugh.
"C'mon folks, this is the best we could do!"

Posted: 3/13/06 at 2:43pmI can't stand him because it seems like every single one of his jokes is racially founded. The race card has been beaten to death.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 3:47pmI have to assume that Carlos Mencia is pitched completely to a hispanic audience. The one time I watched it (And whenever his ads pop up during Daily Show or Drawn Together) I marvel at the complete lack of humor. He did one bit that involved him on the streets of LA pointing out stereotypical Latin behaviour that came very close to anti-humor. It reminded me of the Fred Armisen bits on SNL when he plays a Native American Standup comic whose jokes all revolve around arcane knowledge that only tribe members would understand. It's all Greek to me.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 5:40pmMencia is all right - some of his stuff has made me laugh -- which more than I can say for Colin Quinn. I think he is the single least funny person to ever be called "comedian." Honestly, I don't understand at ALL how he ever got a show.

Posted: 3/13/06 at 7:09pmI can see what you mean about how he just points things out. He doesn't so much come up with his own material as he brings attention to obvious things. I did enjoy his stand-up show on Comedy Central Presents though, especially the ending. (And for some reason, I can't resist the "dee dee dee" noise.)

Posted: 3/13/06 at 8:49pmI'm not a huge fan of his show, I think it was Comedy Central's attempt to replace Chappelle. HOWEVER, his stand-up is great, both his Comedy Central Presents and his new special which was debuted last night. His stuff always has some sort of message, be it to don't always trust in tomorrow, because then something like 9/11 happens and "sometimes, sometimes..." or that we should be able to laugh at anything that's funny, regardless of it not being PC. I love his stand-up, though not his show. He does have some good stuff on the show sometimes, though.
