Posted: 7/13/08 at 11:23pmIsn't it? That was probably one of the toughest Miss Universe's I have seen! The Top 5 were all stunning. Although I was very surprised that Mexico was 4th. I had her as 1stRU.

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!
I just read all of your comments and started to tear up. You have no idea.
I unfortunately was at DAMN YANKEES tonight and didn't realize that I wouldn't be able to make it back on time to see the show
As I was leaving the stage door, my brother and my sister txted me one after the other just saying "felicitationes" ("congratulations" in Spanish) so I called my brother and he was crying, and screaming. I spoke to my parents (my dad is her godfather) and they were so excited, my mom could barely speak.
We went to the same school since we were five up until we were in 6th or 7th grade. Since she lived a block away from me, we'd always visit each other's places.
I moved here when I was 15 and she visited once and stayed with me and my family for a month while doing modeling gigs in Miami. She was the first of my childhood friends whom I told I was gay, her answer? "Yeah, I've known longer than you have" And that was that.
Her family has struggled SO much. They became unemployed a few years ago, and she basically has supported herself and her family for a while. It's such an achievement to see her triumph like this.
Thanks for all your support and nice thoughts, guys. I heard she gave a great answer and that's what made her win over Colombia. Can't wait to watch the actual pageant.
I will definitely show this thread to her. You guys rock.

Thanks, Alf! I hadn't seen most of those.
Robos, I had no idea you were Venezuelan, that's great. People there must be quite excited, and honestly they need a moment of joy amidst all the bad things going on there.

Posted: 7/14/08 at 7:35amRay- knowing all of this about her background makes me even more happy that she won! As soon as they announced it- I was like Janice on Friends- OOOH My GAAAWWDD! It wasn't just her answer that made her win- it was the sparkle in her answer, her sincerity, and her charm. I was a little worried because Venezuela wins so many times and the producers get to help choose. In this case, she won HANDS DOWN! I'm so proud of her because she has such a sense of humor. I also like that there are musicians in her family. Because of this win- her family will never have to worry again! when you watch the pageant- you will see how stiff the competition was! CONGRATS to you and to her!

Ray and Robo,
My colleague and best friend is from Venezuela. I've already warned him not to surf over to univision.com today because many of the online posters from the other Latin American countries are livid that Dayana won, especially the Colombians. Many of the people in my inner circle are from those countries and they've got no love for my bud from Venezuela right now.
I watched the pageant last night in a bar full of folks from Central and South America. I was worried that a fight was gonna break out depending on the outcome. It's happened before so I'm not exaggerating.
I must admit that if there's one thing I like more than politics it's the Miss Universe pageant. Then again, the pageant is as political as anything jumping off on Capitol Hill. Why surely no here believes that politics has played no part in Miss Colombia getting snubbed perenially (had to go there). Maybe I'm just heterotrash because the ladies that I think have the best bods never seem to make the first cut.
As some say...duele a quien le duele. Miss Venezuela is the new Miss Universe. Despite the fact that most of those chicks look like they've been doctored on more than Michael Jackson, Dayana Mendoza is drop-dead gorgeous while coming off as surprisingly down to earth.

Posted: 7/14/08 at 11:34amThe Columbians are mad because Miss Columbia kept scoring the highest in the events. However, when it came down to pressure time, Venezuela was very poised, confident, and charming. Her answer was better too! She was real and her answer had a sense of humor- not rehearsed. Venezuela scored almost the same as Columbia. Although I can't understand why Columbia got a 9.8 in evening gown. It's always tough when each of the girls was given a different question. I liked it when they all had to answer the same question- then we could "judge" it fairly. Miss Universe is HUGE in the Latin countries. Don't mess with their beauty queens! I remember at Miss USA- Miss Texas wasn't scoring the highest. It was her final answer that did the trick. Besides, the judges don't know how the other judges are scoring. One judge could totally escew the count. That's why they take a final look and I'm sure some of the judges change their score when they only have 5 to look at. You were brave to watch it other South Americans though!

btw last night was not the first time Miss Venezuela beat out Miss Columbia in the final round to take that crown. Those two nations have been beefing for awhile over that pageant.
This is so shallow of me but this year's race to the White House has all the elements of a beauty pageant. My dad and I have been calling each other up for at least 30 years now with post-pageant analysis.
Unpopular opinion: Misses Brazil, Australia, Canada and Japan were robbed.

I didn't like Columbia's dress at all. At what was up with that thing the chick from the Dominican Republic had on?

Posted: 7/14/08 at 12:31pmYeah- I know Venezuela and Columbia have battled before. I have been watching this pageant for over 30 years. I thought Canada looked beautiful at her intro as well. Also thought Japan looked great. I was very surprised at the scores though. I have never seen so many sevens at this level. Vietnam, I'm sure the producers put in to settle the audience but she scored a 7.0 something on swimsuit. She was adorable. They all had great bodies so to go from a 7 something to a 9.4- pretty big discrepancy! However, they do announce that the producers have an input to the final outcome so how fair is that? As far as their dresses, there were some interesting choices. However, they are judged on how they present. My daughter LOVED Venezuela's dress. I still think Mexico should have gone higher too! It's bad to be a blonde in this pageant but I was glad to see a curly-haired blonde- Miss Hungary- make it into the top 15.
