I'm even more cynical, WCA.

Their antics don't inspire anger in me. They bore me. Even Anita Bryant could see that the Phelps crew are clowns with no real power or influence. People talk about picketing Fred's funeral -- I say it's not worth the effort. The worst death for Fred, in his mind, would be one in which nobody gave a crap.

The fact is, I find Phelps more distasteful in that he sets the bar pretty low in what can be condemned. A lot of not-so-good Christians are happy to condemn him. Jerry Falwell did it a lot, particularly post Matthew Shepherd. And I think Phelps even picketed Falwell's funeral. The religious right knows they are a marvelous opportunity to make their positions seem more centered (hey, we don't want you to have equal rights and even want to lock up in jail/quarantine the sodomites, but we're not so heartless that we'd picket your funerals when God punishes you for your disgusting behavior).

Of course Phelps doesn't represent all Christians. But I wonder how many of those on the religious right who would point that out are the same ones who like to equate all gay men with NAMBLA (which, I think, has fewer members actual members who aren't FBI agents than Westboro Baptist)?

So all of the Jews, Catholics, Homosexuals, Swedes, Britons, Actors, Politicians, etc. etc. etc. who haven't personally combated Phelps and remained silent are also in consent? Numerous Christian groups have openly criticized Phelps and have publicly stated that they have no affiliation with him or condone his actions.

However, the more people that take him on, the more he gets off on it. He wants attention, he wants people to attack him. He gets to play the martyr role and is given a platform to preach his filth. When someone bombed the WBC complex, he milked it for every drop of publicity it was worth and cried martyrdom. The same goes for all of the court cases. His evil daughter, Shirley Roper, and the rest of his inbred family of lawyers love suing anyone who dare infringe upon their rights of "free speech".

No form of protest, legal procedure, or method short of killing all of them will stop what they are doing. They know everyone hates them - and they want you to because they can twist it to prove their claims. They are a hard beast to combat because they bait you into so much anger and hate that you want to attack them, but that plays right into their dirty hands.

I keep reading this flier over and over and over and my young, slightly naive, and extremely optimistic brain can?t even wrap it?s head around it. I can?t even begin to fathom that someone would seriously write something like that. When I read it, I assumed it was a parody, knowing that someone actually wrote that and meant every word of it is a bit much for me to actually take in. It sure as hell gave my faith in humanity a swift kick in the groin. I personally the best way to handle this is just for me to be my happy gay self. History pretty much dictates that progress will happen and we will win. I think Fred and company realize this, there?s no other explanation for their ridiculously desperate behavior. If I didn?t loathe him as much as I do I?d feel sorry for him.

Well, Jews aren't Christians, so ... yeah. Moving on.

The fact is that people like Phelps do make it easier for people with equally bigoted and hateful stances to skate by because they aren't screaming and raging and picketing the funerals of soldiers and dead celebrities. All roads lead back to Nazareth, so aren't all Christians accountable? If not, why? Phelps and his ilk can point to scripture the condemns homosexuality. Is there scripture the more lukewarm Christians (and the Christian Jews) can point to that exalts it?

Phyllis, the thing to remember a lot of Christians know nothing about the Bible earlier than the King James translation, and the English translation of the passages that they repeatedly point to in order to condemn homosexuality do not necessarily mean what the original intent was -- even more so in some more modern translations.

But the other thing you said was what I was trying to say. Take a look at a typical religious right renouncement of Fred Phelps, which is more about them patting themselves on the back at how wonderful and compassionate they are, and how horrible both Phelps AND the homos are:
