I just finished watching season 8 disc 4 of WILL & GRACE from Netflix. Final episode...balled my eyes out.
It's odd because I remember that when I saw the finale when it originally aired, I was very disappointed. But after watching the entire series in chronological order over the past month, it really made much more sense.
When Karen sings the ballad with Jack...a river of tears ran thru my house. SO touching!

I think "Will & Grace" is one of the best sitcoms ever.
So do I.
And I still stand by the fact that the finale was the worst in the history of great shows.

I agree with that. At least in the Top 3 worst.
Their entire last season, sans a couple of okay episodes (the sing-along Sound of Music was promising), was a major disappointment. Never make your main character pregnant. Ruins the show.

That Karen/Jack moment is easily the best of the episode. My main beef with the finale is the same issue I have with the Mad About You finale. I don't see the point of breaking up a couple and having them get back together in the last moments just for some extra drama in the finale. It really puts a damper on the whole storyline of the series.
Like many superior TV shows, W&G ran about a year too long.
It was a bit painful that WIll and Grace spent that much time separated. But isn't the what happened with the creator and his real life Grace? I don't think they were speaking when the sitcom started.
The last season (at least) was difficult to watch. I felt that the characters that had been so strongly "created" began acting against their very natures making for some completely UNBELIEVABLE scenarios. Not that I expect realism from sitcoms - but if the writers have a history with the characters and they write them to behave in a certain way - breaking character just to suit a plot device is too deus ex machina for me.
I think many sitcoms make the big mistake of going campy for the final season. Roseanne did it to a stronger degree, but I agree, I think they really gave up on the truth behind the comedy that made Will and Grace so marvelous.
I am not a fan of final shows in general, but I thought Will & Grace's final show was great. Beat the hell out of Seinfeld & Friends for sure.
Greatest finale in history was Newhart.

It was sad for me to see my Eric made up to look like an old man.
Madbrian, it was. I think M*A*S*H was up there, too. I remember seeing it when I was little and asking my mom questions about it for weeks.

In addition to Newhart and MASH, St. Elsewhere had an awesome final scene. It was so creative, surprising and it completely redefined the entire series in one scene.
ONe of my favorite, and most underrated, series finales was Ellen's first sitcom. If I remember correctly, there was no mention of her being a lesbian, and it was presented as if Ellen had a vaudeville-esque career. I thought it was a brilliant end to a troubled last season with a lot of bitter feelings.

"...balled my eyes out."
The pain must have been excruciating.

I can't even bend that way.
But seriously, I think W&G began to suffer from a syndrome that afflicts a lot of beloved sitcoms: the characters eventually become reduced to one easily pigeonholed characteristic (Will is uptight, Grace is self-involved, Jack is an idiot, Monica is anal, Joey is dumb . . . )
WILL & GRACE is without a doubt one of the best sitcoms of all time.
Certainly one of my favorites. I never got why people--especially gay people--ragged on it so much.

While not my favorite finale, I agree with the ragging sentiment, Reg.
The song with Karen and Jack was a highlight of the entire series.
For me, their best episode was the Sing-a-long Sound of Music.
It was such a bad episode, but then again the whole season was pretty much a disaster (except for the SOUND OF MUSIC episode). The show had become pretty bad in Season 7 though, I can just remember Stan walking in at the end of that season, it was such a ridiculous gimmick.
I feel there was absolutely no need to "break up" WILL & GRACE. Especially since they did the exact same thing in Season 4 (or 5) when Grace decided to date Leo and they got into that huge argument, one of the most emotional, well-acted moments in the show. The whole episode was completely unoriginal and so far-fetched in a really obnoxious way (Beverly and Jack, for example).
