Posted: 6/9/14 at 2:46pmMay I say that I find it hilarious that people get so hung up on Hedwig that they ignore the actual Trans role, Yitzak, is played by a "cis woman" I guess Lena's just not enough of a name to make a stink over.

I don't really understand what is trans and what isn't anymore. I thought Yitzabk was a cis* man played by a woman?
*Why does the rising prevalence of the words cis and cigender get people all riled up? To me, it's a lot easier to say/write than "person who was born the gender they identity with." Is it because it's a word that describes the majority that the majority didn't sign off on?

Posted: 6/9/14 at 3:15pmLike black people, I think it's most appropriate to relabel a minority group with a sense of meaningless patriotism. Therefore, they are Trans Americans. And what American doesn't love a Trans Am? Especially straight guys with teeny little pee-pees.

I have a FTM friend who is outspoken about his dislike of the word tranny, so I don't know if he's anomaly or not.
Does anyone ever call an FTM a "tranny"? Either as a pejorative or in an insider kidding-around manner? I've only heard the word used by MTFs and transvestites.
Does "transvestite" also cover women who dress as men or does it just cover men who dress as women?
Also, when did the word "tranny" attain the pejorative status it is now ? ascribed as having. I've only heard it used by draq queens as part of their insider trash talk.
Does the use of "trash talk" among peers constitute a pejorative?
Do men who bash trans people really yell "Tranny!" the way men who bash gay people yell "Fag!" and "Dyke!"? I didn't think men who bash would include "tranny" in their vocabulary until recent events. But is it really the case?
Sorry/not sorry if my questions trigger. TIA for answering them anyway.

This is a discussion for another thread, but I never got the impression that Hedwig was actually transgendered. Yes, she enjoys dressing up as a woman, but she doesn't express any desire to actually physically be one. That's only done so she can marry Luther and leave Berlin. Which, I think, is part of the horror of it. She feels forced into it.
I've been reading Kate Bornstein's memoir and it's hard to reconcile her free use of the term with the highly proscribed script I'm used to on Tumblr. The Problematic Police get under my skin more than I can say, but at times I do see their point. I'm not on board with the idea that my status as a straight, white, able-bodied cisgendered woman is something that can be used to shut me up. I am, however, one million percent certain that the voices of transpeople have been silenced for too long, and I'm happy that that seems to be ending now.

Kate Bornstein is currently undergoing cancer treatments. Some of NYC's leading queer and indie performers are holding a benefit for her on Sunday June 15.

When a few hashtag activists on social media decided to start a "movement" because they had nothing else to do and a bunch of bored people jumped on board.

I loved when Kate took on that movie "Ticked Off Trannies with Knives," which was the first gay project I had seen get decimated by the members of furious trans nation. She didn't understand what the fuss was about in the title but just felt like the director didn't know anything about ticked off trannies. She lambasted him over the simple fact that trannies wouldn't run in heels and then fall over when a heel broke. She spelled it out, trannies kick off their heels and RUN.
That's the kind of discussion and expertise I appreciate. But I am a phag, so who cares what I say.

Bingo. Hedwig is incredibly complicated and those who just yelled "Cis men shouldn't play trans roles!" They've never seen Hedwig or only know it second hand by people who are outraged.

I know my fried been called a tranny pejoratively before but I don't know that it's ever happened to any other FTM person out there, so I don't want to assume that one person can speak for his entire group.
He did have this to say about the whole brouhaha when it started (Trigger warning - He uses the asterisk after trans and uses the word "privilege." Luckily, he never says "cis.")
The word itself can be used in many ways, but that does not change the fact that it's used as a weapon, usually against trans* feminine people. I think it takes a certain kind of privilege to be able to completely dismiss that, so I think the whole 'you need to get stronger' bit is bullsh*t. Ru just doesn't want to be told what to do, I suspect. And - I have a feeling if any of the images or language Ru used directly impacted Ru's everyday life, OR were more societally taboo (think about other historically harmful words that are conspicuously absent from the show) - the story would be different.
walk a day in someone else's shoes... or at least listen to them when they tell you what you're doing is harmful.
As for me, I'm not trans(gender, sexual, or vestite), so I really don't feel it's any skin off my nose to not use the word tranny. But I'm apparently a PC Policeman, so don't go by me.
