Remember when no a politician would even dream of bashing a union?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Lg4gGk53iY

So always look for the union label
It says we're ABLE
To make it in the USA!

I wonder if "we're able to make it in the USA" always had a 2nd meaning: "we're able to make these clothes in the USA" and "we're able to survive here in the USA."

I don't understand why the Tea Party is for this bill...aren't they suppose to be against government interference? What a bunch of hypocrites

But they also hate teachers and their indoctrination of our youth.

This will likely be an unpopular opinion, but here goes. I'm not a fan of political shenanigans, and by that I mean using procedure as a weapon. The GOP used it in the US Senate to stymie the Obama agenda. That was deplorable, and this stunt by the Wisonsin Dems is also bad, but on a much lesser scale. We get the government we deserve, and if the people are gullible enough to buy the GOP/Fox agenda, and are willing to vote against their own interest, then this is what they deserve.

madbrian - to some extent I agree with you, but your ideal doesn't take something into account: the GOP doesn't play fair. For so long the Democrats have been rolling over and taking all their shenanigans, all the cheating and lying and abuses of power. Obama tried for two years to reach across the aisle for bipartisanship's sake, and got nowhere. The GOP got back in power, and in turn are abusing it again. If the Democrats don't stand up and DO something, the GOP machine is just going to keep running roughshod over the Democrats and worse, the average person.

For better or worse, the Democrats are supposed to be standing up for the average person. The GOP corporate axis has been in control for too long, and I'm GLAD the Democrats are finally doing something, even if it's a little "dirty politics."

Rachel Maddow details how the demontrations in Wisconsin are more than budget concerns but are an attempt to bust the unions and destroy the Democratic party.

Stolen from Facebook:

Are you sick of high paid teachers? Teachers’ hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It’s time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - baby sit! We can get that for less than minimum wage.

That’s right. Let’s give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM

with 45 min. off for lunch and plan — that equals 6 1/2 hours).

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.

Now how many do they teach in day…maybe 30? So that’s $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.

LET’S SEE…. That’s $585 X 180= $105,300 peryear. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master’s degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children

X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute — there’s something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher’s salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student–a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!)

The problem for most people isn't the salaries, it's the pensions.

As in most everything else these days, I see almost no possibility for rational discussion.

We exchange higher paying salaries for our pensions. Pay us more, and we'll gladly pay more into pensions and health care. We went into our job KNOWING we wouldn't make much, but that we'd be taken care of as far as benefits go.

Here's the thing - people keep attacking teachers yet decry the state of education in this country. Maybe if teachers were shown more respect by other adults, kids would show teachers respect and we'd be better able to do our jobs. Instead, we're attacked by parents who think they know better, politicians who think they know better, and right wingers who think they know better. What model do kids have to look at that says "Hey, maybe we should respect our teachers - they're smart people who are trying to help us?"

Teachers should be paid MORE, not less. They should be shown respect, not constantly dragged through the mud in the press and in dining rooms throughout the country.

No wonder our educational system is so bad.

Maybe if States stopped stealing from pension funds it wouldn't be a problem.
It's stealing from the poor and middle class to fund tax breaks for the rich. Omg, it's totally redistribution of wealth! The GOP has gone socialist! Goth must be freaking out!

Wisconsin made a contract with their teachers. That's not an analogy, it's a literal fact. If Wisconsin can no longer afford the terms of that contract (a debatable assertion) then they can go back and attempt to renegotiate. In fact, the Teacher's union has offered to do just that- and take cuts that are about equal to what this bill demands. But Walker won't accept that- he want the unions destroyed. And not just in Wisconsin: this is the first offense in a national push to kill all unions by public employees.
Some right wing rag spells it out- this is just the beginning

It never ceases to amaze me how many people can support politicians who not only don't represent them, but ACTIVELY seek to destroy them.

I'm just gonna say it, the GOP are HORRIBLE. Seriously, I know that Democrats are not flaw-free, but at least they want to help America and it's population. The majority of the GOP is out for their own benefits. Most are not honest people (I think Politicians in general are disgusting but Republicans take the cake) and they make nothing but bogus bills and try to pass harmful laws. I hope one day the GOP is completely washed out and cant obtain any power. Sadly, as long as idiots and morons are born, chances are we will have the likes of these wackos in office.
*Not meant to offend anyone, when I say GOP, I mean the creeps such as the one's who are pushing this bill, the DOMA, and many other crap idea's*

You'll get no argument from me.

The sad thing is, there are a lot of people out there who identified as Republican twenty, thirty, forty years ago when, while it was still often not in their best interest, at least could justify it based on a common belief. So many still hold onto that, and are just brainwashed into believing things that aren't good for them.

I can't tell you how many conversations I've been in with people who were FAR from millionaires who honestly think the rich shouldn't be taxed more because it's not fair to them.

Just think of the logic of that. It's enough to make your head hurt.

Jason I know two pretty much lifelong Republicans who are horrified by this situation. It was pretty awkward to even discuss it because they were so disgusted by Governor Walker's actions. This could very well be a bridge too far for the Republicans.
#42

Wisconsin Dem. Senators flee the state

Joe, I agree completely. My father in law is like that - lifelong Republican but has been voting Democrat the last five years or so because he's so disgusted by what's been going on.

There's going to be a major change in politics coming this year -- I think enough people are fed up that it's inevitable. I just hope the change is peaceful.
