Attack on Ecuadorean Brothers Investigated as Hate Crime

The two brothers from Ecuador had attended a church party and had stopped at a bar afterward. They may have been a bit tipsy as they walked home in the dead of night, arm-in-arm, leaning close to each other, a common tableau of men in Latino cultures, but one easily misinterpreted by the biased mind.

Suddenly a car drew up. It was 3:30 a.m. Sunday, and the intersection of Bushwick Avenue and Kossuth Place in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a half-block from the brothers’ apartment, was nearly deserted — but not quite. Witnesses, the police said, heard some of what happened next.

Three men came out of the car shouting at the brothers, Jose and Romel Sucuzhanay — something ugly, anti-gay and anti-Latino. Vulgarisms against Hispanics and gay men were heard by witnesses, the police said. One man approached Jose Sucuzhanay, 31, the owner of a real estate agency who has been in New York a decade, and broke a beer bottle over the back of his head. He went down hard.

Romel Sucuzhanay, 38, who is visiting from Ecuador on a two-month visa, bounded over a parked car and ran as the man with the broken bottle came at him. A distance away, he looked back and saw a second assailant beating his prone brother with an aluminum baseball bat, striking him repeatedly on the head and body. The man with the broken bottle turned back and joined the beating and kicking.

“They used a baseball bat,” said Diego Sucuzhanay, another brother. “I guess the goal was to kill him.”

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

The article Mr M just posted is interesting. Even the simple perception of homosexuality is an issue (which is really not surprising - just ask any elementary school kid taunted for being fag). The behavior of two BROTHERS was too much for their attackers to bear. Shouldn't the hetero hand that feeds us give us some guidelines as to what won't offend their delicate sensibilities?

Seriously. What happened on line at Disneyland?

We were there during Easter vacation with our youngest son who was in second grade. It was pretty crowded the day we were there and it was a long wait for Splash Mountain. There was a couple in line that was simply being inappropriate in my opinion. Not only were they over the line but it was as if their foreplay was
choreographed. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if we weren't right next to them.

And how did it last for 45 minutes?

The lines were long that day.

I have to say that I find a lot of public making out to be presentational: they seem to be doing it just for the thrill of it and/or the possibility of upsetting people.

That being said, it seems as though these women were singled out because they were a same-sex couple, and that's wrong, pure and simple.

And Radiana, you have to understand that anytime the words "protect the children" get too near the words "gay couple," you're going to raise a lot of hackles.

Radiana, stop throwing out red herrings, and stop mischaracterizing posts. In no way did I imply that there should not be "limits as to how far a couple should go in public with their affections". No intelligent, thinking person would have gleaned that from my post. If that's what you inferred, that's your problem, but it's in no way a surprise, based on any number of your ridiculous posts. I did, however, IMPLY that you didn't raise your son properly because he wore the shirt with the F word on it to the mall. Yes, teenagers tend to be rebellious no matter how good a parent you are, and it's your job to pick your battles wisely in guiding and dealing with them so that you send them into the world as responsible citizens with tools to make their own judgments based in part, at least, by the value system you instill in them by your words and deeds. Simply put, you chose wrong and, in that instance at least, allowed Paul Blart: Mall Cop to parent your child rather than doing it yourself. I'm not implying that, I'm flat out stating it.

Having said all that, I’m of the opinion that Radiana's 15 minutes are up, so please let's get back to the serious discussion about the real important issues at hand.

Thanks for the heads up Reginald. I first mentioned children when my son wore the t shirt to the mall. I wish I had more time to explain but IAMWHOIAM has said my time is up, she's banning me from this discussion. I'll see you on another thread Reginald.

Not purporting to ban you at all, Radiana - I couldn't and wouldn't. I was just commenting upon relevance, or lack thereof, of your posts, to a discussion, and yet again you seem to miss the point and its cultural connotation. Which may be part of the issue. We just obviously don't speak the same language, or see things through the same or a similar prism, but that's what makes the world go round.

Oh okay. I didn't mean it just in terms of protecting them from gay couples. I was talking about inappropriate behaviour in general. I see where people took me wrong since the thread was about a lesbian couple.

Thanks again Reginald.

I'm not a fan of PDA, but how can they call it a family mall if they've got a Victoria's Secret and Spencer's (so I've read?) Either way, kids come across things that you don't necessarily want them to come across until they're older.

Yeah, I don't want to see any couple playing tonsil hockey in public, straight or gay. But a kiss on the cheek is pretty innocent. I don't see how you can kick someone out of a mall for that - it's ridiculous. Let's say for example I'm meeting my sister or mom at the mall for shopping. I would probably give them a hug and kiss on the cheek. So I'd get kicked out of the mall for that? Dumb.

Right, Stockard. If indeed it was a simple peck on the cheek there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and anyone crying for them to be ejected from the mall is an idiot and a bigot. However, if it was intense making out, the mall staff would be within their rights to ask the couple to leave.
