Wrapping up the Andrew Breitbart story

Hopefully the shoes have all dropped and we can move on soon....but Clarence Page did such a good job wrapping it up in the Chicago Tribune, I just had to share:

"Breitbart's not worried about getting the other side's view of stories like this. He's convinced himself that his willfully conservative Web sites provide a useful alternative to what he sees as a left-biased mainstream media. Bring it on. There's plenty of room on the Web. Let the consumers decide whose version of journalism is worth their time.

But consider this, dear consumer: Just as you want the media to be fair and balanced, be fair to yourself, too. Don't cheat yourself by exposing yourself only to views and ideas that agree with your preconceived notions. The Web offers a range of views and sources. Enjoy. But keep a healthy skepticism. And, for those who wish to engage in citizen journalism, remember the old-school lesson that Breitbart appears to have learned the hard way: Getting the story right is better than getting it first."
Making sense out of Breitbart's bum story

The New York Times did an excellent job with the issue as well:

The Shirley Sherrod story tells us so much about ourselves, and none of it is pretty. The most obvious and shameful fact is that the Obama administration, which runs from race issues the way thoroughbreds bolt from the starting gate, did not offer this woman anything resembling fair or respectful treatment before firing and publicly humiliating her.

Moving with the swiftness of fanatics on a hanging jury, big shots in the administration and Bill O’Reilly of Fox News came to exactly the same conclusion: Shirley Sherrod had to go — immediately! No time for facts. No time for justice.

What we have here is power run amok. Ms. Sherrod was not even called into an office to be fired face to face. She got the shocking news in her car. “They called me twice,” she told The Associated Press. “The last time, they asked me to pull over to the side of the road and submit my resignation on my BlackBerry, and that’s what I did.”

This woman was thrown to the wolves without even the courtesy of a conversation. Her side of the story? The truth? The administration wasn’t interested.

WOW. Some of you people drank the Kool-Aid. You'll defend him no matter how many times he fails.

When Bush tried to blame the media, we NEVER stood for it.

It's a shame that you people are so afraid of honest debate, and staying true to the hope and change we voted for.

Joe, it is ironic that the Obama Administration did exactly what the right wanted - and somehow now, the ones to blame for this is solely with the Obama Administration or the NAACP. It is amazing the lack of accountability on the part of the Bretbart, and hopefully, he will be on the losing side of a nice little lawsuit for defamation.

Everyone else should have learned from Acorn to never trust the source, especially if its Breitbart.

Now, Breitbart squirms, spins, and huff and puffs, and tries to find some way to retain his credibility. Everyone made mistakes, but the first blunder and the biggest blunder is Breitbart's! He published a tape without vetting it and asserting it to be something that it wasn't. I hope he (actually, not, I hope he doesn't) have a good lawyer.

Joe, isn't it funny that somehow Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity are now not part of the Fox News Network?

They only pivoted when they realized the story was something other than what was first presented.

But I guess facts again don't matter.

Breitbart had the entire tape, and the entire tape was eventually reported. Unfortunately, it does not exonerate poor old Shirley.

Joe, it is amusing that now Newt is blaming the white house for his erroneous reaction to the whole fiasco.

I truly wish that many of those men women gleefully destroying Sherrod again find the same grace and understanding in their lives that they have shown others.

Many folks handled this poorly - but it seems the only ones acknowledging this are the WH, the NAACP and Vilsack. Everyone else, including those who edited and distributed the defaming tape are awfully quick to blame others.

Exactly YWIW- And again, I feel compelled to point out that if the NAACP were rife with racial hatred you would be able to produce dozens if not hundreds of pieces of evidence, not just one fraudulent clip.

Ronald Reagan, another champion republican liar, used to complain about Welfare being so abused that a woman in LA would pick up her check each week in a brand new Cadillac. She was, of course, a completely mythical character.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Joe, but didn't that mythical welfare-collecting woman wear a fur as well as drive a caddy? I always rather thought that was gilding the lily, even for Ronnie's handlers.

At least Breitbart had video to show. Unlike the majority of liberal media who will tell a lie without any proof.
