#81IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, STOP READING
Posted: 2/1/05 at 12:20amYes. Margo Martindale played Big Mama in the recent Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She was also in the original Off-Broadway cast of Steel Magnolias. She originated the role of Truvy, played by Dolly Parton in the film version, and being played by Delta Burke in the upcoming Broadway revival.

Margo Martindale also played the neighbor who was left to tend to Julianne Moore's son in THE HOURS.
But back to Million $ Baby.
This is the one film that has really haunted me recently. As much as I loved Vera Drake and Finding Neverland, M$B keeps coming back with it's themes, and, little scenes that did not make much sense on first viewing (the hole in the socks scene, for instance) now creep into my mind and make the picture so much more.
This film really reminds me of BREAKING THE WAVES. It is about unconditional love and need to repent and redeem, make up for lost chances and living life to the fullest with what little you are given.
I have never been a huge Eastwood fan, but he nails this one both as an actor and director and since the best performance of the year was not even nominated (Paul Giamatti) I am kind of rooting for Clint to win both awards.

Sueleen: I agree with you on all counts, having never been an Eastwood fan. My 2nd viewing of BABY made me appreciate his performance that much more. There isn't an overstated moment in it, and he underplays the Haggis humor throughout, making it that much more organic to the character (no "laugh line" readings.)
May I vent about one thing in this Oscar race? The assumption of Foxx winning as Best Actor. I love Chris Rock, but his stating, repeatedly, that not voting for Foxx is tantamount to a racist vote -- that "black people will be upset..." -- doesn't help anyone's cause. Maybe Jamie deserves it, but as much as I think racism is alive and well in America, I don't think it surfaces repeatedly at the Oscars. Let Jamie win fair and square, not because voters must be told, repeatedly, that not to annoint him will mean he's "robbed." People fail to win for lots of reasons every year. If God forbid Jamie doesn't win, it may be for positive (non-Racist) reasons -- like Sueleen's strong pro-Clint feeling. There may be people in Hollywood who are as moved by Eastwood, and if they vote for him,it won't be to hold back a black man.

Posted: 2/1/05 at 1:48pmThis week I have been attending all the screenings for the nominated movies that are followed with Q & A's. Sunday night was Million with a Q & A with Clint, Hilary, and Morgan. Last night was Aviator with a Q & A with Leonardo and the screenwriter. tonight is Finding Neverland. One thing I have learned throughout the years atthese screenings is that you can sort of tell which way people will be voting by just listening to conversation. In the last 2 years I have won the Oscar contest at our parties because of it. Let me just say Jamie Fox while still getting my vote does not have a lock on anything.

Adrien Brody, pop!
So, Iris, who could beat Foxx? THAT would make things interesting!

Posted: 2/1/05 at 1:59pmAlot of people are liking Clint Eastwood and Don Cheadle. And while Hotel Rwanda does not have the budget to campain as aggresively as the big movies; the production compay is making sure that there are screenings of it almost every night.

It was a bloody battle between Daniel Day Lewis (expected to win) for Gangs of New York and the Jack (thought to be the upset) for About Schmidt.
The Pianist also settled the bet between Marshall and Scorsese for Best Director.

Well, if Foxx does not win and Eastwood does--I will give a virtual bowdown to Roxy.
I have to say that while precedent usually indicates the winners, there have been lots of surprises in these last few years.
Anything is possible--and that makes it more fun when there are upsets. :)

Posted: 2/1/05 at 2:05pmABOSLUTELY JRB. Do you usually watch the oscars in a aprty or at home? I Live in Pasadena. So Usually there is a party to go to. But I yearn this year to watch them home alone.

Usually a party because I love having a ballot contest with prizes. But sometimes, I like to watch them alone or with just a few people because a. I don't have to play host and b. I don't have to spend the whole show adding up ballots!----I can actually enjoy the show.
So, it just depends.

oh--and always at my home where I can control the room and tell people to quiet down!
My best friend and I like to do nominee themed food--we are complete dorks. And people like my reactions--cuz I am very SuperBowl about it. The year Marcia Gay Harden surprised was a particular bout of joyful screaming that greatly entertained.
