I used to get them horribly as an adolescent.
EXTREME sensitivity to light and sound (you literally canNOT bear a single photon of light to touch your eyeball); and I always got incredibly nauseated.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 11:28amThere are different kinds of migraines, papa. I've been getting two different kinds since I was 6. One was misdiagnosed for years as a sinus headache. (The pain was mostly in my face rather than my head). The other is called a cluster migraine and when it would get really bad, I'd be nauseous and lose part of my vision. Those were extremely bad. I've found that Imitrex helps me the most - with both kind.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 11:33amAw, I feel for you. Migraines suck. I get "temporal" migraines every once in a while (throbbing in both temples, eye pain and bad earaches). Not everyone has nausea or light sensitivity (I don't). If its persistent, I'd see a neurologist. A couple of Excedrin Migraine tablets usually help me. Good luck!

Posted: 8/7/06 at 11:35amIt's amazing but Excedrin Migraine sometimes help me too - and I've never found any OTC medicine that helped before.

see, i thought it was sinuses, but then it migrated to both sides of the mid to back of my head and just throbbed like crazy for a while.
i'll be picking some of that up.

I "outgrew" mine twice in my adult life, only to see them return. I used to keep a headache diary, to look for possible triggers. Found none. I had them long before I drank red wine, and have experienced them with/without a few glasses of vino rosso. Someone told me iodine content of foods affects them;haven't seen that, either. For a while, I heard a baby aspirin per day wards them off; then I heard the opposite. I've been on that regimen, but can still get them with the aspirin. I do think lack of sleep, changes in weather/barometric pressure are factors. I got them in Europe in 2001, and have to believe the gruling flights played a role.
As I've gotten older, I've found them less severe. But I still have "classics," i.e. with the aura. Anyone else get the aura? You can't describe it to those who don't, though the closest is a post-camera flash, that intensifies. It's a scary precursor that brings up dread.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 12:13pmI used to have a migraine every month and thankfully they appear less frequently now. Extreme sensitivity to light and nausea with tightening and pounding in my skull. Please kill me I remember crying. Imitrex is a miracle cure. I squirt the stuff in my nostril if I feel any symptoms starting. Lately I've been having pain in my face and I've used Imitrex and the pain stops dead in its tracks. I think I'm going to pick up some Excedrin Migraine and give it a try. Imitrex is sooo expensive.

Papa - I get really bad headaches too - I don't know if they're migraines or not - usually it's a pounding in the head, sometimes with the sensitivity to light - I've only had the nausea part when I was sick otherwise. Usually I take a couple of Excedrins and go to sleep in as cold and dark a room as I can get. A couple of hours later I'm usually OK.
When I was younger a doctor told me to take the Excedrin as soon as I feel anything LIKE a headache coming on - and it usually DOES stop it. I probably take the Excedrin a little more than I should, but it's better than getting those headaches.

You can add me to the list of migraine sufferers. Although I've never had them officially diagnosed, I get all the classic symptoms. It usually starts with an aura....and an inability to focuse correctly. Sometimes there is numbness that starts in my tongue or lips and then moves its way down my arm. Then usually, it moves into the bad headache, which is usually centered over one eye. Occasionally, I'll get the nausea, but usually not.
I've figured out that one of my biggest triggers is artificial sweetner...all kinds. Nutrasweet is the worst, but Splenda will still cause a mild headache. Unfortunately, my last one happened on Saturday night, just as I was sitting down to watch a few of my students in a community theatre production of "Bye Bye Birdie". While I'm sure there are a few on this board who would say that was enough to cause a migraine.....I can't figure out what the trigger was. All I know was that sitting at Applebees afterward I rushed to the bathroom twice thinking that nothing was going to stay down, and then I suffered most awful stomach pains all night.
Best of luck getting through this Papa. I'd also reccommend the Excedrine Migraine, which has extra caffiene. And if you can't find any of that, I usually drink a ton of Coke!

I get migraines and sinus headaches. They are very different and should be treated differently if you want to get rid of them. What you described sounds like a sinus headache. Sinus headache pain will move from one area toward the back of the head as the sinuses become more congetsed and develop more pressure. It's best to treat sinus headaches with a combo of pain reliever and decongestant.A migraine normally hits a large area of head all at once, very fast and with little warning.
A migraine usually starts, for most people, with seeing flashes of light out of their peripheral vision, temporary complete or partial loss of eyesight, extreme sensitivity to light and sound, vomiting and a lot of other fun stuff.
An otc migraine medication will kill the pain of a sinus headache, but it will come back unless you also traet the sinus problem.

My mom used to get these horrible horribly migraines when I was younger, and I remember they'd get so bad and she felt so sick that she couldn't even go to the doctor for medicine. She eventually was given a huge supply of shots she could give herself when she had a mirgraine. She used to get them so bad my dad would end up having to give her the shot because she couldn't even give the shot! I don't know what the medicine in the shot was, but has anyone else had to do this? I hope I don't get them anytime soon

Migraines suck...and no one else gets them from the same source I do (I said something to my doctor...he was clueless). Mine are eye migranes. They start in my bad eye and the pressure in there shoots WAY up. Then about 30 minutes later my entire head is throbbing, my other eye's pressure goes up which cause me to not be able to see well out of that eye and I can't move for about two hours. If a pin dropped it would make it hurt even more.
So far, I haven't found a medicine that works for it and have stumped 10 eye doctors. Luckily they only accurs about once a year

I had migraines all through my teens and early twenties. I recall it as feeling like knives were being stuck through my eyeballs. The headaches were bad enough and frequent enough that I was worked up to rule out a brain tumor.
They abruptly stopped during my first pregnancy and I've never had another migraine since. Hormonal link, maybe?
