"Will He Like Me" and "Vanilla Ice Cream" (both from "She Loves Me")are both on the blacklist, or so I have been told.
Hey, My Fair Lady, I'm applying for Vocal Performance, and I found out at a university summer program that its also really risky to sing an aria because your voice is not technically mature enough for it. When you sing an aria like that at a college level, you're still getting compared to Cecilia Bartoli and Angelika Kirschlager.
But I also know that Voi Che Sapete is considered by some to be in the realm of "standard vocal literature" or whatever. But it might be a good idea to do an art song anyways....
PM me if you want to know more, idk how much sense I just made because I'm all hyped up on coffee
Try A Quiet Thing from Flora the Red Menace or Autumn from Starting Here, Starting Now.
Even try On a Clear Day, from...On a Clear Day You Can See Forever and Make Our Garden Grow from Candide.

"So now that I've gone back and done my research haha, I was thinking of a few different options instead. How's "Wherever He Ain't" from Mack & Mabel and "Will He Like Me?" from She Loves Me. Two others I really like are "I'll Show Him" from Plain and Fancy and "Keep it Simple" from Oh, Captain. Let me know :)"
Mack and Mabel tends to be very popular, would avoid. Same with stuff from She loves me. Stuff from Plain & Fancy and Oh, Captain is fine.

Please don't do "Times Like This" (AKA The Dog Song) from LUCKY STIFF. It's done to death. There are plenty of other good songs in the show.
You know what, this is just my opinion. Some songs are indeed overdone (anything from a hit show or a currently running show ie. RENT/Wicked etc.) but if you can take that particular song on, do your research and completely SELL IT like no one else can. Then do it! Do whatever you feel most comfortable with!
Yes AKD, but it's one thing when you introduce your pieces and one of them is defying gravity and the panel doesn't let you sing it. I've seen it happen before.
So my voice teacher wrote a musical that might be playing at NYMF this fall...can I use a song from that?
I don't see why not, but have another song ready. CCM made me sing 2 and a half ballads and 2 uptempos to see my range
This is for a CD, not a live audition...it's the Common App Arts Supplement.
When i was at Sheridan auditions(for MT) in Canada a girl wanted to sing Wicked and Rent. The Audition Panel Didn't Even let her start.and that was the end of her day...
I agree. Research. If its hard to find the sheet music for your song...thats probably a good thing lol
is children of eden a bad idea?
if i remember correctly that show has alot of black characters? dont quote me. I was Taught NEVER to sing a song that you couldn't realistically play at auditions for schools. i know there is such thing as color blind casting but its safer on this side. if it isnt a black character-than forget what i just said lol

Godspell and Damn Yankess is fine. Stuff from Children of Eden tends to be very popular, so would see if you can find something else.
I keep bouncing between different songs that I want to do, but I've narrowed it down to three (as of now haha). How do these sound?
"I'll Show Him" from Plain and Fancy
"Being Good" from Hallelujah Baby
"Willing to Ride" from Steel Pier
Let me know!

Those are all great choices! Why? Because I never heard of them
Most Rodgers and Hammerstein is good, with exception of the Sound of Music, obviously.
Absolutely no Phantom of the Opera or Cats or most any other Lloyd Webber anything. And with that also goes Sondheim.
I'm currently looking at My Strongest Suit from Aida. I can sing it well and it shows off a lot of great belting, but I am worried that it is way too overdone, popular and/or too contemporary.
I was also thinking of some possible Miss Siagon, Jekyll and Hyde, Carmen (the opera) or Candide. I just really don't know though...
Their all nerve racking and tough decisions.

Aida and Miss Saigon and Jekyll are definitely overdone. Candide - Glitter and be gay tends to be popular and I wouldn't attempt it unless you can do it REALLY well. Carmen (opera) - make sure your MT programme audition accepts opera, many don't.
Something that I think needs to be reiterated is to never sing a song that's supposed to be sung by the opposite gender. A boy I know made the mistake of singing a girl's song to audition to go to school at Walnut Hill and was turned down. Granted, that wasn't the only factor but they really stressed not doing that when he got his feedback.

I don't even understand why you need to have good material to auditon for a school? It's not like you are auditioning for a musical or play.... Can someone explain to me the reason why we need to sing a song that's not overdone to be accepted in college, like AMDA? it's not a big deal school!
Your song obviously needs to show off your range. Even if you find the perfect song that isn't overdone or anything, it might not suit your voice. Whenever I have an audition, I go to my voice teacher and I run what I was thinking by her,and if it does nothing for my voice, then I find something else.
