Your song obviously needs to show off your range. Even if you find the perfect song that isn't overdone or anything, it might not suit your voice. Whenever I have an audition, I go to my voice teacher and I run what I was thinking by her,and if it does nothing for my voice, then I find something else.
DO NOT sing "Vanilla Ice Cream."
No one wants to hear it.
Agreed re: Vanilla Ice Cream.
Also, I have a friend who sang "Will He Like Me" and, although obviously everyone is different, for her it cut really awkwardly. Also, in spite of her being a lyric soprano, it sounded way, way too high-the ending note is beautiful but can also come out awkwardly because of how unexpected it is.
If it's the best for you, it's the best for you-just my experience.
avoid webber unless you can really sing it
i'd forget les miz
What about "Home" from Maury Yeston's "Phantom"?????
Thats a good choice. Pretty music. No one ever does it. hahaha
an awesome audition song is "out of sight out of mind" from tale of two cities. its a new show, but nobody really knows it yet. it helps convey emotion and showcases an awesome belt. check out the website www.talemusical.com you can listen to it i think. email them and they'll probably release you a copy. idk but its incredible.

Is "Taylor the Latte Boy" incredibly overdone? Like, for college auditions?
How's Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof? Or anything from Bare or Next to Normal?
Not for college, at least not yet(I'm 14), just for regional stuff.

I was thinking about doing Home from Maury Yeston's Phantom too. How about It's Nicer in Nice from The Boyfriend?
Taylor the Latte Boy is not technically from a show, so I would avoid it...but do as you wish, my friend....
Most schools require that you sing a song from a published musical, so "Taylor" is out. And yes, it still is very overdone.
Don't do Fiddler
Don't do BARE
You're really not supposed to do anything that has been on Broadway in the past 5 years.
But, in the end it is ultimately your choice. If you think you're amazing at this song, and that there is no other song for you then by gosh do it.
Good luck
How are we all feeing about doing stuff from "Egdes"?

what about stuff from the civil war? there are a lot of songs there that convey really strong emotion. i was also wondering about alone from a year with frog and toad.
Don't do Civil War. Just stay away from Wildhorn in general.

"Never Will I Marry" by Frank Loesser from Greenwillow, 1960
Nota bene: this song has a killer jump in it. It is either a tenth or an eleventh--I can't count that high--but if you can absolutely nail it, then do it. If you cannot cleanly make the jump, skip it.
It is on the cast recording if you can find it and also on a very early Barbra album (1st, 2nd or 3rd).
The song also gives you something to sing about. If you analyze the lyric, it could be a fairly bitter song. Don't play the bitterness, play the frustration of trying to explain your predicament. As written the character is a wanderlust which is why he can't marry. Make your POV anything you want as long as it works without going overboard.
By the by, the song was written for a man, and a basically non-singing man at that, our own Norman Bates, Anthony Perkins.

You want to avoid all material. If you think of an audition song, its overdone. You should probably do magic tricks over singing.
I'm having a really hard time finding an uptempo song that would showcase my belt and isn't overdone. Any suggestions??

what about songs that you have to slightly change your vocie for? there's at least one song that i'm considering that doesn't work unless you do a slight southern accent. i just didn't know if that was really an issue or not...
I know you say ALW is out, but what about some of his lesser-known pieces? My brother does a fantastic rendition of a piece from Whistle Down the Wind.
Sometimes, when it's not a professional audition, directors WANT to know the song that you're performing so that they'll be able to tell if you're performing it correctly. Or something; I don't really get it. A friend of mine once auditioned for a show with some song that the director didn't know, I think from Scarlet Pimpernel (which I thought was not exactly obscure), and they gave her sheet music for "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins and asked her to try it again.
