when the musical is over, and the orchestra is doing the play out music, why don't more people clap for them when they are done? I am always the one to start it, and sometimes it's only me who is clapping, like the other people can't be bothered to clap for the musicians becuase they werent' on stage. but hey, they were still performing, and they are half the show.
do you clap for the musicians? I think they deserve it.
Always!

Always. and it bothers me that the whole audience doesn't.
Without musicians, there is no show! Always applaud musicians! It takes so much muscular endurance to play every night for over two hours, especially if you are a brass player. They deserve extra applause, if any.
Absolutely!

Every time. I make it a point to stay in the theatre until they finish so I can, unless I am running out for some reason.
If I stay through the end of their piece I will. if I'm alone I'll always stay, but if I'm with like my family or certain friends, they might not want to wait it out.

Oh, I agree with everyone. The orchestra works hard and gets no appreciation for it. I usually throw in a cheer for them as well. It's sort of like no one wants to clap for the people behind the scenes. But, come on! I want to clap for the lighting people!
I'm not sure that most people even realize that there is an orchestra. Hell, they can't even be bothered to stay for curtain calls.
I'm glad you all share the same view. I think they are so underappreciated and audiences today just don't get it.
I only applaud for the orchestra if it's a musical.

99% of the time, I'm LONG gone by the time they finish playing. Once the curtain call is finished, I'm out the door as quickly as humanly possible.

Margo, I'm shocked and disappointed. With your throng of fans, I'd think you'd be there signing autographs for quite awhile after every show...with a small break to applaud the band.

autographs??
Who is Margo??? Is she famous? Should I know of her??
Margo hates fans. They give her a rash.

Definetly! Always clap for the orchestra. I always clap for the tech people too, or I try to if possible. Actors aren't the only people who work on shows.

Rath, I heard Margo gets rashes from anything furry, too. True or untrue?
Margo's a diva. No autographs. I mean, you guys, OBVIOUSLY.
I too try to stay for the end of the exit music, but sometimes I'm w/ others or want to rush to the stagedoor. But if nothing else, when they are acknowledged by the cast, I applaud, scream, cheer and stand for them if I'm not already standing for the cast. Every so often, people will join in which thrills me. But yeah, always a chance if you're at a show and hear someone screaming for the pit, that's me.
The orchestra doesn't get enough respect considering they MAKE the musical. I hate that actors have to gesture to the conductor before people applaud, because I feel like the orchestra is just as, if not more important than most of the people that came for the curtain call. It just seems like the gesturing is there because the conductor bowing on his own wouldn't be enough, it has to be literally pointed out to the audience before they acknowledged the musicians.

"Autograph fiends, they're not people. Those are little beasts that run around in packs like coyotes...They're nobody's fans. They're juvenile delinquent, they're mental defective, and nobody's audience. They never see a play or a movie even. They're never indoors long enough."

When the actors gesture to the orchestra, I like to think the orchestra are getting their own 'call'. I think it's great to give the orchestra their own applause, too, after play-out. Have to say, some of the shows I've seen, the orchestra have literally made the show.
