I wouldn't be too hasty about excluding the lesbians.
You never know when a motor or something is going to break and you'll need someone to fix it...
I'm of the opinion that straight bars have an "unposted" policy...maybe not here in NYC, but in the rest of the good ol USA.
It doesn't have to be posted.
And gay bars do as well. How comfortable do you think a straight guy, or any female, feels in a gay like, say, The Eagle?
Prob about as comfy as I feel--and I'm INTO leather!

I don't think it's about discrimination when it comes to making rules for the comfort of your clientielle. There are womens bars where no men are allowed, and that is the rule for a reason - and that is nothing new. I even know of a leather bar that enforced a strict leather dress code in order to be admitted.
I for one, don't go to straight bars - I am not straight and do not have a desire to do so.

Lord.
The whole thing doesn't really sound that bad. It's the quote from McFeely that rubs me the wrong way, although I'll make allowances for the fact that I have no idea what sort of tone was taken.
Reading the article and looking at the photo that accompanied it, it doesn't sound like they're refusing admittance to all heterosexuals and lesbians, just those who don't comply with the rules. I could be reading it wrong, though.
Another thing to consider is what the climate for gay men is like in Australia. Any of our Australian posters care to chime in?
Cool!
Now I know where I'm going on my next vacation!
Is this the same Mr. McFeely who was such a good friend to Mr. Rogers? If so, I'm very disappointed that he would end a sentence with a preposition.
Well, firstly, Melbourne is about as tolerant of gays as it could get. There was a big fight a few years ago, with Melbourne trying to take Sydney's crown as the "pinkest city in Australia".
"Mr McFeely said the hotel welcomed everyone, but its gay clientele had expressed concern at the number of heterosexuals and lesbians at the venue."
I don't think they're excluding everyone that's not a gay man, it's more of an intimidation tactic...At the same time, though, why didn't they just beef up security?
Also, there is, at least in my city (which isn't Melbourne), a relatively large problem with gay venues being over-run by straight people. It's the "thing" to do here; straight men go because straight women have fewer inhibitions, straight women go to have a good time...
I really dislike the provision for excluding lesbians...though.
"There were more than 2,000 venues in Melbourne catering for heterosexuals, but his hotel was the only one marketing itself predominantly to gay men."
I'm guessing that doesn't include the plethora of gay-tolerant venues and those that cater to gay PEOPLE...
I really don't know how to feel about this...
Come again?
"I dont understand WHY a str8 woman would want to go to a gay bar"
For most of the same reasons you do, silly!
To pick up a gay man?
Yes, Dame ... to stick a ruffie in your drink, steal your sperm and have a little dame for their very own.
if it means i can get to play pool again, i'm all for banning lesbians.
I am all for banning them to. Yeah.. yeah.. kumbaya and all that. Just stay away from my pool table.
Use the lesbians as bouncers
They wouldn't have to bounce. Everyone would just stay away.
