Clarification from Obama's campaign:
"Senator Obama's family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II –- especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald. Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically."
#53He Confused One Camp With Another... No Big Deal

He confused Auschwitz with Buchenwald, but other than that, the facts are correct:
"Yesterday, Obama mentioned that his uncle, Charlie Payne, helped to liberate the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz. The Republicans were hoping that they could catch Obama lying - that maybe Obama never had an uncle who helped liberate the Jews in Europe. Well, in fact, Obama's uncle (his grandmother's brother) helped liberate the Nazi camp at Buchenwald (Obama mixed up Auschwitz and Buchenwald). So the Republicans (and a few Hillary fans emailed me as well) are trying to allege... what exactly? That Obama's family did in fact help save the Jews in Europe, but Obama got the name of the camp he liberated wrong? Okay. I'm not quite sure how that gives us any insight into Obama (other than his uncle is a hero) - I don't really know the difference Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Bergen Belsen and the rest of the camps. I just know that I'd be damn proud if a member of my family helped liberate them. Not to mention, according to the US Holocaust Museum, Obama's uncle's Infantry Division didn't just liberate one of the camps that made up Buchenwald. It was the first Nazi concentration camp liberated by US troops in all of Germany."
This is a non-issue to me (a Jewish Clinton supporter).
Obama's Uncle's Infantry Division Liberated Buchenwald

This sounds like a Hillaryesque flub.Imagine Hillary making such a claim.
Since Obama made it, all is forgiven as the new messiah can do no wrong.

Roxy - the ultimate truth of the statement remains - his Uncle was in the first infantry that liberated a concentration camp - he just got the wrong camp.
It is not as though he confused Sunnis and Shias multiple times while discussing an ongoing war...
If it had all been inaccurate, you would have a point, but the underlying sentiment of what he said was true.
BTW - I do find it ironic that I am a Clinton supporter defending Obama - but there is nothing to this.

The Washington Post, which usually washes his underwear, gets a little testy with him:
Granted, it is getting late in the campaign. The candidates are tired, and prone to making silly mistakes. Many Americans might have problems distinguishing Buchenwald from Auschwitz. But should we not expect more from a Harvard-educated presidential candidate? Is it too much to ask that an aspiring commander-in-chief knows (1) that Auschwitz (like many of the other Nazi death camps) is in Poland, and (2) that the eastern advance of the U.S. Army in World War II stopped on the river Elbe?

"he can do or say anything he wants and never be held accountable for anything. ever."
That is and was George Bush.
"until november."
Obama survived Rev. Wright and a battle with Hillary Clinton. He will win in November. He can bring in the electoral states and the popluar vote. That said, John McCain has done nothing to unite his base and has lost ground while running unopposed! Not to mention his ditch of the Evangelicals and his offensive behavior toward American Jews.
It's amazing to me that the media is all over this Clinton/Obama division of the Democratic party while the Republican party is in shambles.
Huckabee is needed here but like you said it ain't gonna happen.

Really? You're amazed? Is that because you think the 'media' is liberal?
