I LOATH "Effi Briest" by Theodor Fontane!
Don't know if it's known in the US and yes, I know it's a "classic" but it's so mind-numbingly boring that I would have prefered to beat my head against a wall again and again to reading this book!

"The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand.
I have never, ever actually had to close a book and take a break from reading it due to sheer hatred of a character OR the author until I read that book.
She was an absolute raving wackadoo, and Roarke and Dominique are two of the most hateful and hateable characters that have ever been birthed on paper.

I'm sorry, I HATED The Catcher In The Rye and it has nothing to do with not knowing where Holden was coming from or being too similar. It was the writing style that I hated. I don't think I'd mind it half as much if they took out the word "goddamn" from it. Then maybe it would be at least semi-readable.
Also, I agree with Great Expectations. It was five hundred freaking pages long. I got a C in English because of that book.
And as for the Bible...my favorite thing to do in Barnes and Noble is to put all of the Bibles in the fiction section.
I adore Animal Farm. George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm are two of my favorite books. Then again, the whole metaphor thing is very interesting to me and I appreciate how difficult that would have been to write.

Oh, and The Da Vinci Code. I read it for plot's sake, but it took me forever because I could not get past the writing style. It reminds me of something I would have written in the 8th grade. Well, style-wise, not plot-wise.

ugghhh..nothing will ever be as bad as "The Red Badge of Courage". That book bored me to the point of actually thinking that, sometimes, a book burning can be a good thing.

Or maybe the "Occult" section? When I mentioned the Bible earlier, it was also meant to include all of the others such as the Koran, etc. I don't want to single out only one religion.

I'm currently reading "Reading Lolita in Tehran". It's really boring, but I won't come to any conclusions until I finish the book.

oh and Richard III. Everyone always says what a cool book it is. I don't quite think so. I gave up after the second scene in act 1. It was so dull.

Just to clarify, I wasn't saying that I disliked Great Expectations (I actually quite liked it when all was said and done), just that it was tedious to read but ultimately rewarding.
No one (myself included) "got" Heart of Darkness when we read it for class. It really is a tough read.

The problem with Dickens is that he was paid by the word, so he wrote as much filler as he could in order to up his pay. (I'm sure it may have been more complicated than that, but that's the abridhged explanation). That explains why all (or most) of his writings seem tedious and overwritten, with many obscure characters.
That said, I loved Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and David Copperfield once I got into them. A Tale of Two Cities is the one that frustrates me the most.

there are many books that i have had problems with for one reason or another, but ones that i can say i absolutely HATE are...
The Scarlett Letter.. just ughhhh, anything Dan Brown he is probably the most overrated excuse for a writer ever, The Old Man and the Sea, it just wasn't the book I wanted it to be, and the book that i can positively say i hate the most is The Five People You Meet in Heaven, what an awful awful awful piece of literary crap... cliche, so badly written and such a money making scam

I ADORED The Five Peopole you Meet In Heaven. I cried at least three times through taht book. I thought it was lovely. Not literature, especially, but I still loved it.

i'm pretty sure i could've written The Five People you meet in heaven in the fourth grade and have it be more sophisticated than Mitch Albom's version...
i didn't find there to be anything original in that book... and he tried to shove his message down the reader's throat on every other page...
