perhaps a questions I should know the answer to, but if I want to start loading my own cd's onto my IPOD, is there anything I need to know?

I'm not quite sure how to do it. I know I can "after the fact" buy the covers from itunes, but will anything I load automatically go to my itunes?

no idea how it works....as what I've done in the past is just buy from itunes

If you have iTunes and you start putting your CD .. It will burn it right away.
Make sure the internet is open, so you dont have to label it..

First a terminology clarification. 'Burning" is when you put music from your computer onto a blank CD. "Ripping" is the process of copying music from a CD to your computer.

Open itunes. Click on EDIT, then PREFERENCES, then choose the tab labeled IMPORTING. This is where you can tell itunes how you want to import your music.

You don't have to buy covers. itunes will automatically find them for you and apply them at no cost. If it doesn't automatically find a cover, right-click and choose GET ALBUM ARTWORK. If that doesn't find it, you can find the cover yourself at Amazon.com or on a google image search, save the cover image, then add it to the album by right-clicking on the song/album and choose GET INFO.

itunes sometimes sorts stuff strangely, particularly with broadway albums that have several different "artists' in the cast. It likes to sperate them into their own albums. If you have this, or other sorting problems, let me know and I can address them.

Open iTunes.
Insert CD.
Close any automatic dialogue window that opens. You don't need it.
Hit the "import" button on the bottom right hand corner in Itunes.
Once it's finished, you'll probably have to reorganize the songs, but it's not too hard.
Search for the album, select all the songs, right click and edit the Info to whatever you want.
It will only find the covers for the albums they sell, so, if iTunes doesn't sell it, they won't have it.

If you only wanna rip one song, load the CD, and then click and drag the song into your library.

It's very self explanatory, particularly if you have a Mac. It basically walks you through the whole thing. Once you do one or two CDs, you'll get the hang of it.

And no, you don't have to purchase artwork from iTunes. I didn't even know that was an option. I'm anal when it comes to the organization of my iTunes music and all my albums have the CD cover - but I always go to Amazon and then drag the CD cover to the artwork box on the lower left hand corner.

And as was mentioned, sometimes it categorizes things strangely - but as I'm sure you know, once the song is on iTunes, you can edit the information. I tend to organize everything by album.

Munk, thanks! I never knew that about getting the artwork from Amazon - and it's so easy!

Yeah, it's very easy.

I used to drag the artwork for each individual song, until I realized that I could highlight many songs at once. Saves me a lot of time!

I did it by clicking on the album, not the individual songs. I have a pc, so it took me a minute to figure out how to drag it into iTunes, since I can't keep my browser and iTunes up on the screen at the same time.

I even went to the site of the theater where I'm in rehearsal for a show and found the artwork for the show (it's an original musical, since I have the songs I'm learning on my iPod. You've opened up a whole new world for me!

Haha! I love selecting my own album art, too. If the cover is rather ugly or something, I like finding foreign covers or something and I'll use that.

For some reason when I copy a song onto my itunes, the songs that have the album title info, the picture will load itself. I think it's one of the widgets I have.

You can manually add album artwork from a jpg file. Select the songs, and right click, then select Get Info. You will see a blank 'artwork' box. Double click, and it will prompt you to select a file. You can also change/add information.

..and apparently you can drag them as well. I learn new things about itunes on a regular basis. It's a really simple program that can do wonders.
