Math used to be hell for me but ever since I've gotten to high school and life has become completely hectic it's been nice to go to a class where everything just is. I don't even mind doing algebra problems. Everything has one answer. It's nice. Science is what kills me. I just don't care enough... oh well.

Am I cut out to spend my time this way?

Yup, I'm a math geek almost as much as I'm a theatre dork. Granted I just play the music, can't sing/dance in my life, so not sure what you're out for...

Maybe it has to do w/ the theory that we're tailored to certain subjects...if you know you want to be an actor, it makes sense to think math has no value to you and thus you're gonne be more disinterested and not be as good?

Then again, I'm a weirdo. Usually math goes w/ science, ss w/ english? I'm fantastic at math and social studies, not great at english and science...and awful at foreign language

wickedrentq I am in the same boat as you. I was a math/economics major in college (and still do math for a living) and I play the violin, but it would not be pretty if I were up on stage singing or dancing. I have found that most people that are instrument players are also good at math, but maybe that is not as true for those that are singers/dancers/actors. Side note, since I love math, those sudoko puzzles are my new favorite to pass the time on the subway.

I HATE math (science as well). I never had problems understanding it. But I started loathing the subject once I couldn't see the purpose of me studying it anymore. And I was right. You do NOT need half the stuff EVER again, unless you go into a realated profession.
I suffered through those classes in school (I used to joke with my friends, that I was so bored I could feel my braincells dying off....lol).

Ah, story of my life. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm just not good at math. There's something about it that just doesn't sit right with me, and I sometimes find that being stubborn and not understanding is better than being open to it, still not understanding it, and feeling bad because of it. Trigonometry makes my heart hurt, and I get to decide between four Calc classes for Senior year. Joyous.

Sudoku's not math. :) You can use dots and squares and other symbols in place of the numbers and it'll still work. But it is something that requires deductive reasoning, a math-related, left-brain skill.

And math and science are important no matter what career you go into. How can people even understand issues like stem cells without some grounding in science? How can they understand the true meaning of all those interesting-sounding medical surveys that come out without knowing something about statistical principles?

I'm definitely a theater/English person (I teach them, for crying out loud), but I've also always been good at math - until I got to calculus, that is. I managed to get a B in the class, but struggled, and never saw the point. In fact, one of my favorite stories (and one my students get a huge kick out of my telling) is this:

My best friend is a math geek. He LOVES math, numbers, logic -- all of it. Well, one day in college we got into an argument about whether or not calculus is necessary in ANYONE'S day to day life (I conceded that it's important for certain occupations).
"Give me ONE example of a time I'd ever need calculus in my life," I challenged him.
"OK," he said, shrugging as though it were nothing, "let's say it's raining out, and your roof is leaking. You put a nucket under the leak to catch the water. You can use calculus to figure out when you're going to need to change the bucket."
"Um, can't I just LOOK at the bucket and see when it's about to overflow?" I said, skeptically.
"Well, let's say you're blind," he answered.
"Then I would hear the water spilling over the side of the bucket and I'd know it was time to change it," I came back at him.
"You're deaf, too."
"Ok, then I can walk near the bucket and FEEL the water on the carpet, knowing the bucket is full," I said, emboldened by my previous minor victories.
"Um, you're in a wheelchair too," he said.
"I lost my legs?"
"Yes, you lost your legs too," he said, confident I was done.
"Well, then I could sit by the bucket and reach down and feel the water," I proclaimed.
"You lost your arms too," he said.
"So let me get this straight," I said at last, "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I lost my legs AND my arms and I still give a **** if the roof is leaking?"

Of course I clean up that last line for the kids, but this was an ACTUAL conversation we had - and we laughed for like five minutes straight afterwards.

Math, I've always been pretty good at it, not stellar. I find it to be a total bore, and I really dislike it. If it didn't look so terrible on my transcript I'd stop taking math right now...since I'd completed NYS requirements anyway. I seriously have enough credits to be graduating right now...I just need Phys Ed credits and I'll be out the door. I take Calculus next term so...I'm afraid, since pre-calc has been a bit bumpy thus far...I actually have to *gasp* thing about how to do things. Hrrrm, Biology and Chemistry are good in my book, but Physics, good grief. Well it has alot to do with who my teacher is, since I'm not motivated enough to self-study because I happen to have a teacher that doesn't teach. re: math and theatre people dont mix....

Hands down, I enjoy American History, English, and Foreign Languages much more. (French is a freebie class [Regents foreign language classes are a joke], Spanish Literature is becoming a bit of a bitch, Latin [not a favorite of mine, but a requirement].) To my utter dismay my HS doesn't have a drama department, it's such a disgrace because it's a notably humanities heavy school. Thank goodness I was able to take a drama class on the college campus we're on.

I can't wait until senior year and my 5 free periods...

[edit] I just realized I'm a Legend. re: math and theatre people dont mix.... This sooo isn't healthy... Updated On: 12/8/05 at 05:49 PM

I guess I'm one of the exceptions because I'm almost as devoted to math as I am to music. And you know what makes math even better? PHYSICS!!!!!!!! Once your in AP Physics, all the stuff you thought you'd never use in AP Calculus actually has a point, and you actually use it!!!!!

Ahhhh physics and musical theater- my two greatest passions...........what an odd person I am lol
