movie characters that died that made you sad/upset/whatever... (SPOILERS)

Disney was the cause of massive numbers of traumatized children when Bambi's Mother didn't make it back to the thicket, myself included.

E.T. was also pretty traumatic, my three year old self tried so hard to be brave during that scene, right up until they used the defibrillator and cut to Drew Barrymore. I lost it, and still get a little misty-eyed by that whole sequence even today. Especially as Eliot thinks he is saying good-bye. Looking at it now I can't help but feel that, based on that scene alone, Henry Thomas was robbed of an Oscar nomination that year. I think he certainly ranks up there with some of the other child actors nominated over the years.

Bambi's mother in BAMBI

Emma in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (though the "give my daughter the shot!" scene gets to me even more than the death)

Ratso Rizzo in MIDNIGHT COWBOY

Annie in IMITATION OF LIFE

Brian Piccolo in BRIAN'S SONG (if TV movies count)

hairspraydude, animals get to me the most, which is why I still can't bring myself to watch MARLEY & ME. I don't know if I will ever be able to.

My brother, who is a 280lb 6'5" ex football player, weeps like a baby every time he watches E.T. (I do, too.)

Tony, West Side Story (movie, obviously). If I haven't lost it by time Maria goes, "Don't you TOUCH him!" that line just about does it.

John Coffy in The Green Mile.

I remember one of the oddest ones was THE SPITFIRE GRILL. Allison Elliott as Percy Talbot.

(spoiler ....)

The entire movie was told through her perspective. She was the protagonist from the beginning. But then she dies tragically which shocked me, and the film keeps going for another 10-15 minutes or so. It was disturbing, but it also felt a little weird to have the story and characters continue without her.

I agree about Bambi's mother. Although they were just temporary, I was pretty disturbed at Snow White and Pinocchio too.

And just assuming they died, the guys playing the music while the Titanic was sinking was the saddest part of that movie.

MUUUUUFASSSSSAAAAA
Ray the Firefly in The Princess and the Frog
Ellie in UP
Dumbledore (I was sadder in the book)
BETH IN LITTLE WOMEN (the musical made me cry the most)
When I *thought* Betty White's character had died in "The Proposal"
The Pirates of the Caribbean death that bothered me the most was Commodore Norrington... so senseless.

Givesmevoice, I can't look at the screen when Cedric's dad reacts to his death... it makes me feel really uncomfortable.

I'm also going to agree about Stepmom. My dad even cried.

The first movie that ever made me cry was Andre. Yes, the seal did not die in the movie, but he came close, but I think they did mention that he did actually die in real life at the end.

Miss Collins in Carrie always upset me. Aside from Tommy, she was the only one who seemed to care about Carrie. But at that point, Carrie thought everybody was playing a cruel joke on her and just had it. Anyway, it is one of my favorite scenes:

Beth in Little Women really bothered me. I was about 5 or 6 and it really made me sad!

Thomas in "My Girl." Every time she cries "Put his glasses on! He can't see without his glasses!" I lose it!

Skip in My Dog Skip. Mainly the part when he can't jump on the bed because he's so old and Diane Lane has to help him...oh Lord.

I was 7 when I saw the Les Miserables concert on PBS and Ruthie Henshall was Fantine. When Fantine died, the light faded and she took a step back and turned her back towards the audience. I couldn't speak for the rest of the night. It really shook me up!

ANd of course, Kate Winslet in "Finding Neverland." When Johnny Depp says "She went to Neverand..." ugh.
