As far as music goes, Wicked is fabulous. Les Miserables is one of my favorites too.
Look into Sondheim, Rogers and Hammerstein, Kander and Ebb, William Finn, Michael John LaChiusa

The Light In The Piazza. Hairspray's good if you're just starting out.

The music from Barnum is pretty catchy and fun.
Guys & Dolls - Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat
Les Mis - Master of the House/ Do You Hear The People Sing?
Yeah, I'm more of an indie/pop-rock guy, so I base this off of things I've dabbled on.

Les Mis, Miss Saigon, and RENT are good if you're just getting into things. Wicked was how I got into modern theatre (these days I'm not much for it)...you love the actors/actresses and you look into their other work and it grows from there.
Just have to say that a soundtrack goes with a movie. The Wicked cd would be a recording.
That being said.
Les Miserables, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, A Chorus Line, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Sweeney Todd, The Drowsy Chaperone, Spamalot, Into the Woods, South Pacific, Applause, Evita, Man of La Mancha, The Last 5 Years, Urinetown
To name a few of my favorites.
