re: scariest movie youve ever seen

If you won't watch movies with subtitles, you've mised the beautiful CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON - and no, it's not just a fancy kung fu movie.

When I was a kid, the original DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS scared the hell out of me. It was shot in black and white, and had a sort of documentary news footage feel.

Watching that, you really wonder how Ang Lee could have fu*ked up so bad and chosen THE HULK.

Rear Window is one of my favorites.

And, regarding foreign films with subtitles: on the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon DVD, you can watch the movie with dubbed English instead of subtitles. It RUINS the film. The only way to watch it is with subtitles.

My first horror flick when I was a kid was The House on Haunted Hill with Vincent Price. I still love that movie.

The original Night of the Living Dead. Black and white, lousy acting, it had nothing going for it...except that it was the first of it's kind and when I saw it in a nearly empty theater at a midnight movie I about crapped! Long time ago, but I still remember it!

Stephen King's IT scared the crap out of me when I was little. Then I realized that it was Tim Curry as the clown and it made me smile. Everything from a transvestite to a killer clown. The man is so versatile. . .

"Don't Look Now" with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, directed by Roeg.

"The Haunting" The original only with Claire Bloom and Julie Christie.

By the way, Jon -- I saw TRIFFIDS as a kid, too, and It's in color. It just seems in black and white.

--Amityville Horror 2 (I think one of the most disturbing movies EVER)
--Nightmare on Elm Street (my first horror movie when I was 7 and it scared THE CRAP OUT OF ME)
--Halloween (not really "scary" but a great film non-the-less)
--Rose Mary's Baby--Tension which you wouldn't believe. I just wish they would have shown the baby.

And am I the only one who thought the Exorcist was just plain BORING? Granted, I am going to see the new one Saturday........but the original was too long and too boring.

The Japanese version of "The Ring". Oy.

"Jeepers Creepers" also freaked me out.
Suzanne: I never use catalogs. I'd rather go in the store and see all the salespeople groveling and sucking up to you. Julia: Pardon me, I never knew they were so solicitous at the K-Mart.

I loved that one as well. Have you seen Ringu 2?

Anyone seen St. John's Wort? The cover looks interesting. I was wondering if it was worth renting.

I would LOVE to see RINGU 2, but I can't find it to rent anywhere. I saw the first Ringu in 1999 in London and loved it. I also enjoyed the American version.

Ringu2 is eerie, but The Exorcist still puts the hair on the back of my neck on end!

Exorist
Amityville Horror...still gets me when the priest is going upstairs and that voice says "GET OUT!" Get chills just thinking about it.

My Exorcist story:

In 1980, I was a senior in high school, and VCR's weren't brand new but they weren't in wide use. I also come from a very small town and they didn't use the school money for things like books and tapes, God forbid, we needed all the money for the football team...

Anyway, for some bizarre reason, the school got their hands on a tape of The Exorcist and we were forced to watch it in Sociology class. I'm not a fan of scary movies in the first place, but that one - oh my dear lord - great cinema, but scary as crap.

Fast forward two weeks or so, and they announce that they're going to show the same damn movie in English class too!!! I mean WTF???? So I said, no thanks, I'll be in the library. Isn't that weird though?? I've never been able to figure that whole thing out.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the original one.

I saw it in college - stoned. Not a good idea. Scared the you-know-what out of me!

re: scariest movie youve ever seen

I second "Alien". I don't think I've had so many scary dreams in my life about a movie than I have about this one. A movie that I've actually seen at least. I was horrified of Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Street and I've never watched it.

re: scariest movie youve ever seen

I said this on the other thread, but The Passion Of Darkly Noon. And as for The Eye, I agree with Matt_G. The beginning was probably the most scared I have been in a movie theatre in a very long time, but then the last reel looked like it was directed by someone else altogether. It totally didn't fit with what had gone before.

The Ring

Anyone see the new Exorcist that just opened today?

Yeah, if anyone's seen it please post it here. I'm trying to decide if I should waste 6 bucks on it or not.

re: scariest movie youve ever seen

You know, every scary movie scares me if I'm watching it all by myself at home. If I'm with someone else, it's hard to scare me. But The Exorcist scared me. The Ring scared me only in one part. Pet Sematary has always scared me just with the part of Zelda, the sister that has spinal meningitis that they show in a flashback. Ever since I was young, I cannot watch the part with her. I think she is actually played by a guy though.
