Zone - what would you do if you were Israel?

They left Lebanon and the UN never enforced its mandate regarding disarming Hezbollah - and Hezbollah crossed into Israel's territory, killed I believe 8 Israeli soldiers (on Israeli land) and then kidnapped two more and two them back over the border into Lebanon.

And, literally thousands of rockets are aimed at various Israeli cities from Hezbollah launching points within Lebanon? Haifa has bit hit multiple times, and Israeli civilians have been repeatedly targeted by Hezbollah.

If the international community will not disarm Hezbollah, then Israel is giving no choice but to do so itself. Hezbollah is not a free standing army, it is a militia that hides in neighborhoods and streets that otherwise would be civilian.

Don't get me wrong, I think that the response has been somewhat disproportional, but honestly, since a large portion of the international community would rather see Israel cease to exist, and are unwilling to reign in Hezbollah, what choice do they have? Let their soldiers be taken and missiles launched from the northern border? If anything, this shows Israel that land for peace will not work with Hezbollah. You have to have two sides who want peace for there to be peace. Hezbollah (and to an extent Hamas) do not want peace.

They can only build hearts and minds after they defang those who are attacking them today.

All I can say is that Israel and the US better have a reconstruction plan for Lebanon and get it going fast after this is done if they want to maintain the power of the fragile democracy.

Here is the reason given for the kidnapping. There are two sides to every story.

I guess the fact that Israel did leave Lebanon (which I think was one of your UN mandates) and started to dismantle settlements means nothing to you.

Don't get me wrong Jimmy - I think Israel has used disporportionate force, but I am not sure we would do anything different if in her shoes.

This is not a simple problem, and I fear a solution is going to take leadership - something completely lacking from both sides. And, both sides are wrong here, and both sides are right. Syria and Iran are just making things worth.

There are plenty of UN Resolutions condemming Israel - a handful I agree with. Most are just posturing by anti-Israel contries who would rather see Jerusalem destroyed than a part of Israel.

(Any viable peace plan will have to divide Israel - with parts being giving to the Palestinians, and parts retained by Israel.)

please. if the palestinians had used gaza as anything but a place from which to launch attacks into israel after israel pulled out we wouldn't even be talking about this. hamas does not want peace. hezbollah does not want peace. if hezbollah had wanted peace they would have disarmed and participated fully in the lebanese government.

the reason we're seeing this is that abu mazen had gotten close to actually making a breakthru with some elements of hamas. that and iran wanted something to distract the world from its nuclear program. how else do you explain the some 400 revolutionary guards from iran in southern lebanon or the fact that the missile which destroyed the israeli gunboat was iranian?

well, y'know, ywiw, everybody's been screaming about the christians wanting the rapture and the end of the world, but not so many people noticed that the president of iran believes the exact same thing except he thinks the hidden imam's coming back.

Many people on the left have noticed that, Papa. We refer to Ayatollahs Falwell and Robertson. We use the phrase "Christianist" to equate them with "Islamists"--people who use a false conception of religion as a political tool. I feel that way about many in the the right-wing in Israel as well.

Let's face it: Fundamentalism in every religion is equally pernicious. It is the source for most of the hatred in the world today.
