re: so much for good news from the middle east

The truth of the matter is that if we DO go to war with Syria and Iran, it will not be because of Israel.

It will be because Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld WANT to go to war with Syria and Iran. It has been a stated ambition of the neocons for almost a decade.

Remember: Our president is a (self-described) WAR president.

ywiw, you claimed that bush is not dealing with the consequences of democracy and i pointed out that he is. as are the palestinian people.

i don't know that "our version" of democracy is what is being proposed by anybody but rather the idea that a government should be responsible and asnwerable to its people. theocracies, monarchies and dictatorships which have been answerable to no one, raped their countries, controlled their populations through fear and murder and squandered their resources have been the status quo in the middle east and the world we have today is what support for them has wrought. it's long past time to try a new direction.

re: so much for good news from the middle east

And Bush and Cheney have been trying to institute an executive branch here in the United States that is, in your words, "answerable to no one."

Although NO ONE is saying that the US government is committing those types of atrocities domestically (and only time will tell whether we have been conducting them overseas), Bush and Cheney have been unsuccessfully attempting to "control the population through fear" and successfully attempting to dismantle our long-cherished constitutional protections AGAINST those types of atrocities, namely the Balance of Powers and Congressional Oversight.

As you said about those other countries, "It's long past time to try a new direction."

Hamas, to many palestinians, have met the needs of its people.

There are two faces of hamas:

It is involved in building schools and hospitals in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and in helping the community in social and religious ways.

The military wing of Hamas - known as the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades - has carried out a series of bloody attacks against Israeli targets. It is a terrorist group.

Hamas is a terrorist organization to the Israelis - to the Palestinians, it is clearly something else.

re: so much for good news from the middle east

as you have the opportunity to attempt to do this fall, pj. is that a wonderful thing?

i believe that with understandings for the cultural differences that such a system would benefit the people of most if not all of the countries in the middle east and even the world. the fact that it is not perfect argues for it rather than against it as it has the ability to evolve. even an imperfect system which recognizes the voice of the people is better than one in which the people have no voice.

Papa, your point?

I think they are terrorists, but their followers do not.

Many view the US and its military as terrorists, but I do not.

It all depends on perspective.

re: so much for good news from the middle east

so hamas and the u.s. are pretty much the same thing?

it's all a matter of perspective, huh?

some people viewed that guy hitler as bad, but i mean look what he did for germany? he took a country that was in ruins and within a decade was on the verge of taking over the world. i mean sure, some folks think that what he did to the jews was bad (i mean if you believe that kinda stuff), but really who were we to tell him how to run his country? i mean really, until we had our house in order, who were we to say he was evil? and let's face it, those doggone germans sure loved him, didn't they?

Nice way to twist and distort papa.

I am sure that you have a great future in the Republican party.

You win, papa, everything the US says and does is right, and no one has the right to question or comment.

We never make mistakes, our perspective is the only one to consider, and truth is what we define it to be.

wow, if i cared i'd so go back and count your myriad losses under that rule.

how would you calm things down, pj? i mean it seems that lotsa people have lotsa fingers to point at who's to blame but nobody has any thoughts for what to do. are all of our great thinkers here completely bereft of ideas?

re: so much for good news from the middle east

There will never be peace from within the Middle East until there are charismatic leaders on both sides who desire peace.

There really has never been a Palestinian leader who wanted peace with the Israelis--at least none that I know--and the only Israeli leader who ever really tried to make peace with the Palestinians-- Yitzhak Rabin-- was assassinated by right-wing Israeli thugs.

That is why it is all the more necessary for a charismatic leader from outside to step in and inspire peace. Someone like Martin Luther King tried to be. Someone like Gandhi tried to be. Someone like U Thant tried to be. Someone like Bill Clinton tried to be.

But not someone like George W. Bush.

re: so much for good news from the middle east

do you see any current leaders who could step in and fill that void?

re: so much for good news from the middle east

Hmmm...

Haven't really thought about world leaders...certainly not the pope, definitely not Putin, not Tony Blair any longer...

Can't think of any current Republicans--not Hot-Head McCain or Saint Rudy (saint post 9/11 only).

Maybe Al Gore--he's big with vision. And maybe my hero, Russ Feingold, would have the political imagination--although having a Jew as the US president would surely send the Islamists into high "Zionist warlord" gear.

Barrack Obama...?

Can you think of any?

Yes, but Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the neocons don't WANT peace in the Middle East.

Bush is a WAR president. War serves their needs.

We should all go see Meryl's Mother Courage in the park. There is a lesson for all of us in Brecht's play about people who make money from war.

US Takes major step toward Joining Israel's war

My dad has been in Israel for the past week and my family hasn't heard anything from him. People from our family keep calling to see if he's doing ok, but we know nothing. God, I love my dad's job!

the us vetoed a one-sided arab backed demand that the israelis leave gaza. yep, that's a precursor to war all right.

And now we have Israel Ground forces entering Lebanon.

I still can not understand the unwaivering support of the American Government for Israel, no matter what Israel does. It Boggles the mind, and has for years.

Just so we're all clear, Israel has invaded a sovreign nation.

It's all about the apocalypse. All out war in the mideast is one of the signs that the end is near and there are more than a few people who think this is a good thing.

yep. israel invaded a sovereign nation after members of that government invaded israel and killed several soldiers and kidnapped 2. members of that nations government have fired hundreds of rockets into population centers. hizbullah is part of the lebanese government.

look at it in perspective: would america sit stll if 141 of it's solders were kidnapped and held for ransom? would america sit still if 377 people in miami beach were killed by rockets fired from cuba? if you take it proportionally those are some of the losss israel has suffered.

israel has cut off escape routes and suply routes in southern lebanon for hizbullah. they are not going in to occupy, they are going in to destroy hizbullah. they understand that you cannot bargain with nor negotiate with those who live only to see you dead, you just have to kill them.
