ok... so I love drinking green tea (and other teas in general) but I can't remember... does putting sugar (well splenda or a sweetener) in the tea negate its nutrients?
sugar with your tea.. is it bad?

I don't believe sugar does, but milk kills the antioxidants.

thanks! yeah i read milk does that... but i wasn't sure about sugar... i've never put milk with tea... does it taste different?

This thread kinda reminds me of one of my favourite "overheard" moments on a bus full of school-kids:
"I love the taste of coffee! I have LAODS of milk, and five sugars!"
If you love the taste of something, why would you want to put something in it that will alter the taste of it? I never used to drink any tea at all, then I started experimenting with different sorts, and now I've found one I love without having to put anything else in it. Yay, delicious green tea! :3

I love the taste of tea but I also like a few flavored teas. Orange spice and anise (Stash licorice spice herbal) are my favorites. Also, not all teas taste the same. I like Lipton tea, PG-Tips tea and Sri Lankan teas. They all do not taste the same.

I never drank tea outside of a Chinese restaurant until I discovered Teavana.com (I think from MrMatt's mention of it here, actually?) Now I drink at least 2 cups a day and own more tea paraphernalia than I can keep track of.
Some teas are good with milk, like chai and spice or nut based teas. I don't generally drink milk with fruit, mint or other herbal teas.

I'm allergic to the almighty coffee bean so my life is all about tea. I drink several cups of it a day, but strangely enough, only prefer regular ol' black tea. I add a little sugar and a little milk. Nothing too crazy. I've tried several flavored teas, green teas, etc and not too crazy about them. Although when my tummy is upset, peppermint tea does help a lot.

I do not like black coffee at all, but I love it with milk and sugar. It's just like anything else. Many love milk chocolate, but don't like dark and I don't know of anyone who eats unsweetened chocolate.
Teavana is heaven. I would pay big bucks for a cup of the Zingiber Ginger Coconut Rooibos right now.

I have a book - which, unfortunately, got misplaced with all of the Christmas decorating chaos - called "Healing Teas" which deals with traditional black and green sipping teas as well as medicinal herbal teas.
I can't look up the exact quote in the book, but I recall that it said anything added to teas - milk, honey, sugar, etc. - will chemically change the tea's properties. It was mainly speaking about medicinal teas, but also applied to sipping teas because those have health benefits. And it said that, if you must add something to tea, honey is the best option.

and my new favorite, Golden Jade (a mixture of high quality green and black teas, though it's $18 for 2oz, so that one's just for special.

I use stevia instead of sugar and honey. A bit of an acquired taste, but allegedly and hopefully better for you than other sugar alternatives.

Oh Teavana. So expensive, yet such a delicious chai mix. Luckily for my wallet the nearest store is nowhere near me, so I mostly stick to a less-expensive local teashop that makes some great rooibos blends.

Please don't think I'm being snarky when I say it tastes milkier. :) It does add a certain thickness, but there's also a sweetness and creaminess that gets added. Occasionally, I'll succumb to a bog-standard "cup o' tea" cup of tea, and then I add milk, but only a splash, because too much makes it overwhelming and sickly. If you enjoy tea without milk, then don't ever go down that route if you don't have to. I figure if you have to alter the taste to make it palatable, then you don't really enjoy it, so savour your additive-free tea!
My favourite tea is sencha with sakura. Sencha is a super-delicious green tea, the sakura gives it this amazing whiff of cherry blossom that converted me from a casual tea drinker to a proper tea lover. :)

too many questions but for some reason it's been on my mind lately... so when you add milk to tea.. you can do it to any tea for that affect? i just can't imaging adding tea to milk at all... it intrigues me
and btw.. i don't drink coffee so i don't have that comparison should it come up... a cup of OJ is all i need in the morning to wake me up!

We have a slight cultural difference here, me being English, that means I'm not going to be able to explain this very well. XD Most tea, I wouldn't add milk at all. If you have a delicious tea, odds are it has a wonderful delicate flavour that should be enjoyed. However, we English tend to drink tea as a social ritual and liquid comfort blanket. Rainy day? Cup of tea. Boyfriend left you? Cup of tea. Terrorists on the underground? CUP OF TEA DAMMIT. Instead of enjoying the delicate Oriental infusion, we look at it as a warming drink and dump milk and sugar in it to give it that (hopefully) unique Englishness. This tea comes in a teabag. It doesn't have a name. We just call it tea. (A bit of research reveals it is black tea, as opposed to green, white, or oolong, but a quick survey of my family reveals none of us know that without looking it up. It's JUST TEA over here. XD)
So I'm sure you technically *could* add milk to any tea, but even as an English lady, it just seems a really odd idea to me, so it's not just you. If you fancy giving it a try, make sure it's a black tea. I honestly have no idea if any of the other sorts would be able to stand it. XD

I just finished a cup.
I stopped drinking coffee in 2002. That's when I started drinking tea a lot. I also love Earl Grey tea.
I found the Sri Lankan tea at the Boulder Tea House in Boulder, CO. They make a wonderful martini with tea infused vodka and honey!

Personally I've never liked sugar in tea as it seems to lessen the refreshing factor.
I would only add milk to black tea (such as PG Tips or Brooke Bond) and never to speciality teas such as herbal blends, fruit blends or even Earl Grey. When I do add milk I would try to use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk as whole milk does move the sweetness and creaminess into sickliness, as Weez observes.
And, yes, there's even a difference in taste between the black teas that are drunk by the bucket load in the UK. The office I work in are currently having an internal dispute between those who like the brand in round tea bags and those who like the brand in pyramidical tea bags.
If you want to drink black tea I would avoid the mass-manufactured brands if at all possible and try Ringtons or Yorkshire. My favourite type of black tea is Twinings' Lady Grey which is very delicate and slightly perfumed.
I find white tea to be a good alternative for people who like black tea but don't want to put milk in it.

Interesting. I don't like any teas at all, and never drink it. UNTIIL- I discovered this one tea in a restaurant when they poured it for me, and I can't get enough of it. I send away for it, and buy 6 bags at a time. It's a green tea mixed with toasted brown rice.
