I kind of feel like if you have to ask why they're camp icons, you've never seen Little Edie explain why this is the best costume for today. It seems obvious to me, but maybe that's just because I innately relate to it on that kitsch level.
'I just think if you could somehow take a poll of self-identifying gays nationwide and asked them how many considered the Beales--or Marilyn Monroe or Judy Garland or Cher or Madonna, for that matter--"icons," the result would be less than 50%, probably less than 20%, possibly less than 10%.'
I don't think that poll is asking the right question to the right group. It's not that the gay community at large will identify Grey Gardens as iconic, it's that Grey Gardens probably boasts a comparatively high number of gay fans. Now, I don't know if that's literally true, because I don't think anybody's going to do a legit study on it. But the community of supporters who champion the film certainly suggest it.
I think it's pointless to mince over whether gay icons exist, or whether the Beales are gay icons. It's all relative, anyway.

Not an intentional pun. Is mince that loaded a word, will I have to retire it?
i just assumed that was an inbreeding joke.
You're an inbreeding joke.
No, okay. I mean "it's all relative" in the sense that the definite answer may change with context. I mean it the same way people usually mean it? To suggest that their point of view is understandable within their sphere of existence, but not broadly applicable.
