personally, i think that a "wicked" movie is inevitable. i'm not saying that it's a good idea, just that it's bound to happen. if and when they do make one, what are your ideas on the cast (besides the originals.)

I'm sure the Wicked "tween" girl following would hold a massacre if it wasn't the original cast, or at least mostly the orginal cast, like they did in Rent.

I feel like a "Wicked" movie would be a grand idea if its plot closely followed the novel, rather than the musical. It might throw a bunch of people through a loop, but I want to see the full story in the novel done a bit more justice.

The only problem I would have with a movie of Wicked is that they would change the story like they did with Hairspray and they would take out good songs, and add new ones that won't be good, and they won't use the original broadway cast. They must have Idina Menzel play Elphaba and they must have Kristen Chenoweth play Glinda. Tt is a given!

These are the only things I would need for a movie version.

Idina and Kristin as Elphaba and Glinda. I don't care who else they cast in the other parts just as long as these two play the leads.

And this is the list of songs that they must keep in.

No One Mourns the Wicked
The Wizard and I
What is this Feeling
Dancing Through Life
Popular
Defying Gravity
As Long As You're Mine
No Good Deed
For Good

All the other songs I would be okay with axing, and just maybe turning into dialogue, but every song that I listed simply has to stay in the movie.

the more i think about it, the less i can think of anyone on earth who could justice to elphiba and glinda besides idina and kristin. however, we have to realize, a movie probably won't be made until the popularity of the play dies down, and by then, the originals might be too old to play the parts.

also, i might be crazy, but i heard someone say something about ewan mcgregor for the fiyero. oddly enough, after moulin rougue, i can see it.

Universal made the book Wicked into a show because (and i quote) "We don't think that a movie version would be as effective and entertaining"

If a movie were made, it probably wouldn't be for quite a few years because of the show's success and popularity now. Using the original cast wouldn't be as possible. If Menzel and Chenoweth are around 50, it would be very difficult to pass them off in the movie as young college students.

When Cheno was on The View a while back she said if they did make it she'd get dibs as Morrible and she knew for a fact IF they did make it Glinda and Elphaba would both be unknown.

If they made it into a movie, Universal would have the challenge of recreating the world of Oz. Disney failed at it. People are too much in love with the original movie to welcome another one, even if it is a spin-off.

Idina and Kristin will be much too old to play Elphaba and Glinda by the time the movie is made. Even if the movie were to be made NOW, they would still be far too old to play college students! I'd love to see the OBC, but it's not just going to happen. re: wicked movie

I like the idea of Elphaba being played by an unknown. For Glinda, I think Becki Newton from Ugly Betty would be a good choice! I don't know much about her singing ability, but apparently she can sing. If she could pull off the singing, I think she'd be fantastic in the role!

>> Idina and Kristin will be much too old to play Elphaba and
>> Glinda by the time the movie is made.

They were "too old" when they were on Broadway -- mid to late 30s!

>> Even if the movie were to be made NOW, they would still be
>> far too old to play college students!

Yet, they weren't "far too old" a mere three or four years ago? Or do you just mean in a movie version? Stage leaves some room for older people to portray young people.

I mean, come Bernadette Peters and Cheryl Ladd, in their late 40s or early 50s, portrayed 20-year-old Annie Oakley in a revival of "Annie Get Your Gun" on Broadway a few short years ago -- like what? three or four?!

I've spoken of this before . . . but, with "Elphaba" any age could portray it as it utilizes 'fantasy make-up' and if they stay true to the book or the film "The Wizard of Oz", she should look ugly, old, etc. Ever taken a good look at 38-year-old Margaret Hamilton?! She looked so much older. In the book "Wicked" she is supposed to die at 38-years-old, too.

Of course, it could utilize two actors . . . when they "go back to college" in Glinda's memory and at the point that 'Elphaba' dies--which would be years later.

>> I'd love to see the OBC, but it's not just going to happen.

You may be right, though. Films don't always use the OBC and sometimes they do.

I would have to agree with the statement that the movie would be nowhere as entertaining as the stage production because what happens on stage is LIVE and right in front of you. Copying it onto a movie screen takes out the spontineity and excitement of seeing something happening organically in front of you.

One such example would be the Sweeney Todd movie. Seeing someone murdered (slaughtered I think would be more appropriate) onscreen is shocking but not as shocking as seeing someone murdered live in front of you.

It's a macabre example, but I think it works.

AngActing-
Yeah, I meant for the movie, they'd be too old. On s.stage, it's much easier to play younger characters. There are no close-ups on stage, so of course it's easier to conceal someone's age. But in a movie, the camera is right there, and age is always much more obvious.
You're right, with Elphaba, age isn't as important, because of the green fantasy makeup, and because she is described as looking older in the book. But with someone like Galinda, having Chenowith play a 17 year old college student in the movie would just look a bit ridiculous and unbelievable.
I like your idea to have 2 actresses though. The OBC could play the older version of the characters! That would be amazing. I doubt a studio would cast like that though, just because it might cause confusion with audiences. But still, that would be a great way to let the OBC be in it!

Have to put Amy Adams as Galinda.

Good idea posting this under student, the jerks on the B-way board would have torn you apart for this.

For the most part, I would have to say the original cast. Def. Idina as Elphie (she's bound to offered the role). As far as Galinda/Glinda goes, I love Kristen Chenoweth, but I also love Erin Mackey, so either of them. As for the others... I don't care much, that's why I just original cast. I also agree with lovelyspotlight, I think the movie should follow the book more so than the show. The book explains soooo much more, and to be truthfully honest, the musical hardly follows the book at all (not that that takes away from its greatness, because it certainly does not). I think the stage version should be totally left alone. I don't want them messing with it like they did Phantom or anything, no offense to anyone, but I am NOT a Gerard Butler fan. At first I was like, "okay, he's a lttle more of a demanding Phantom... but later it got really old... he's too agressive for the part."

Anyways, my point is this.... Now, since the Phantom film premired that is what Phantom is always asscosiated with,Gerard as the mean demanding Phantom and Emmy Rossum... no one even pays attention to the stage version anymore. I would hate to see that happen to Wicked, simply because it is so brillant.

The should just make a film inspired by the musical that is based off the book, that leans more to the book's perspective if that made any sense.

Okay, I'm through rambling.
