I still think the Dems will hold the seat, but it is going to be close.

I'm not so sure. "Independents" in Western Mass react very negatively to candidates who come off as if their election is a fait accompli. This is one of the major reasons Mitt Romney squeaked by Shannon O'Brien and into the Mass governor's office. And this is how Martha has been perceived since she very tastefully announced her candidacy before the eulogies were done at the Kennedy funeral (not literally but practically) and the eager gals who read Emily's List filled up her campaign coffers because Martha is a Vagina-American. But is being a Vagina-American who presumed the job was hers for the asking enough? Probably not.
I just wish Sarah Palin of Fox News would condemn Brown for posing for pornography.

I disagree. It's a devastating loss. The supposed 60-seat majority, which was never a 60-seat majority since some of those seats were virtually Republican "Blue Dog" Democrats, will become a thing of the past, and Obama will have to drop health care entirely and spend the next 2 1/2 years fixing a bad economy that got worse for voters in 1 year than anyone imagined it could.
WHY Rahm Emanuel decided to get cozy with the banks and insurance companies still boggles my mind.
WHY DIDN'T this administration follow the old Clintonian mantra: "It's the economy, stupid."
It's STILL the economy, stupid. It's more the economy NOW than it was then.
Stupid.
Emanuel is the problem: He's behind the abandonment of the left, the abandonment of the gays and the devil's deals with banks and insurance companies. The sooner Obama fires him the better.

PJ - I agree that if it happens it is devastating.
But, I think this loss is as much, if not more, about how bad a candidate Coakley has been how good generally Brown has been as a candidate.
I still think the Dems will hold the seat, but I am not putting Coakley's problems squarely on the WH - I am putting them on Coakley. If she had worked hard from day one and campaigned as opposed for assuming that she would win, I don't think this race would be a toss-up right now.
At this point, I think the Vicki Kennedy spot and the full court press on Brown will save the seat.

Posted: 1/15/10 at 2:20pmThe full court press on Brown appears to be backfiring. In one of Coakley's ads the announcer uses the word "Republican" the way Limbaugh uses "liberal," with a palpable disgust. I was also surprised by the use of the phrase "rape victims" in an ad from feminist Coakley.
